Why Inooro TV presenter Ken Wakuraya was arrested while performing on stage

Ken Wakuraya, an Inooro TV host, was detained on Saturday night while he was playing at a well-known bar in Kasarani, Nairobi.

The former Tahidi High actor claimed in a Facebook post that he was detained by police after failing to pay Ksh 20,000.

He bemoaned the fact that he had no idea where he and the others he had arrested were being taken.

“What kind of Kenya is this? Is there a curfew? Why arrest artists? I’ve been arrested, now I’m in a police car because I can’t pay 20k. I don’t know where we’re going,” Ken wrote Saturday evening.

The host who is also a Muugithi entertainer shared live videos that showed them being carried away in a police car.

The videos were not clear enough as it was late at night. In one of the videos, voices could be heard complaining about being mistreated by the officers.

Others were also heard complaining that the officers took their phones. In another video, the arrested entertainers can be heard shouting, “thieves, thieves, thieves!” while hitting the walls of the car they were in.

Another arrested person was heard crying loudly complaining that the handcuffs on his hands were tearing his flesh. “It’s cutting my hands, open them, open them, I’m going to die,” he was heard crying loudly.

Ken also showed the handcuffs in his hands and said, “These are my hands. They caught me and put handcuffs on me. I am an artist. Who did I steal from? I was performing and I was live. The government knows I was performing. Where did I steal from?”

It is not clear whether the broadcaster and other arrested colleagues stayed in police custody or were released later.

Before his arrest, Ken had previously shared live videos of himself entertaining revelers on stage.
