Raila now wants Gachagua to quit presidential race, over Sh200m conviction

Raila Odinga, the Azimio presidential candidate, has recently stated that Rigathi Gachagua, the UDA’s running mate, should drop out of the election due to integrity concerns.

Raila referenced a court decision from Wednesday that required the Mathira MP to give the State Sh200 million that it said he obtained fraudulently.

“Under Section 6 of the Constitution, you cannot contest for presidency or be a presidential running mate if you have been indicted of a crime,” Raila said.

“That means Ruto has no running mate because his running mate has been found guilty of one of the most serious economic crimes in the country,” Raila said.

Anyone charged with a felony by a court of law is prohibited from holding public office, according to Section 6 of the Constitution on Leadership and Integrity.

In light of Rigathi’s determination to challenge the court’s judgement, Raila stated that he must resign while waiting for the Appellate Court’s ruling.

“Before he appeals, he is guilty as charged so let him withdraw,” Raila said.
