Inside Ken Mijungu’s Multi-million Side hustles and Businesses

Ken Mijungu, a well-known newscaster for KTN, has over ten years of experience in the media field.

The journalist has experience working for both domestic and foreign news organizations, such as CGTN Africa, MediaMax Network LTD, and Nation Media Group.

In the Nyanza region’s Migori county, Mijungu was born and nurtured.

He attended elementary schools in Mbita, Homabay, and Migori.

He attended St. Joseph Ombo School for his basic school before transferring to Maseno School from 1998 to 2001 for his secondary education.

It’s likely that many Kenyans are unaware that Mijungu studied law.
The speaker graduated with a bachelor of law from Moi University in Eldoret.

Mijungu’s career

Mijungu’s career breakthrough came during the 2007/2008 post-election crisis.

During the post-election violence period, he borrowed a camera from his brother to capture the chaos as he was closer to the scene, Who Owns Kenya reported.

At that particular time, the K24 crew was also trying to report the issue in Kibra, but due to the chaos, they lost their footage.

His life took a turn when the K24 management called him and asked for the footage. And that is how he got his media breakthrough.

After his impressive role at K24, he joined CCTV in 2012 and worked at the station for one year, and three months before proceeding to Nation Media Group.

He became famous at NTV as the host of the current affairs show sidebar.

In July 2020, Mijungu was issued a termination letter after seven years of service at Nation Media Group.

“The axe fell at NTV newsroom and I was on its way. Seven years in those corridors summed up in a two-page letter of termination,” the media personality said.

Mijungu was among the hundreds of staff affected by digital transformation and the COVID-19 pandemic effects.

Ken Mijungu Legal Consultancy

The media personality unveiled his legal consultancy firm after NTV fired him.

According to a post shared on his Instagram page, Ken Mijungu Legal Consultancy offers immigration, finance, property and imports/exports legal services.

“Believers will always be believers Mathew 6: 26-34,” he captioned his post.

Mijungu’s helicopter hire business

In April 2021, the journalist ventured into the multimillion helicopter hire business targeting wealthy Kenyans and politicians.

He revealed that it costs KSh 186,000 per hour to hire a chopper.

“The choppers operate all over the country. They are based at Wilson Airport; five are at our disposal, plus a private jet. We target anyone who loves luxury,” he said.

Mijungu’s car renting business

The journalist also rents out and sells sleek cars.

In a lengthy post, he disclosed that some of his family and friends have never supported his side hustles.

“I have been doing my car leasing business and imports for a decade now, and a good number of friends and family have never once knocked on my door to give me business, yet I see them driving cars often. I meet them in the village driving 4x4s that they don’t own, some tragically y hired from me by brokers or from people I supply,” he wrote.

House

Mijungu owns a house in rural Migori next to his mother’s.

This emerged after thieves broke into the house and stole electronics.

“Lightning doesn’t strike twice but thieves do, so the first time they broke my reinforced glass window with a sledge hummer or equivalent, carted away all electronics, weeks later they came with a pick-up, or Canter truck and carried away everything else, even ripped curtains off!,” he tweeted.

Rashid Abdalla and Lulu Hassan’s businesses

Citizen TV Swahili news anchors Rashid Abdalla and his wife Lulu Hassan are other journalists who run side hustles.

The duo is the brains behind Jiffy Pictures, a Swahili telenovela production house. Lulu serves as the chief executive officer (CEO) of the company.

Some of the local series they have produced are Zora, Maria, Kovu, Maza and Huba. The shows aired on local stations, DSTV’s Maisha Magic, and streaming services.
