Kawira Mwangaza weeps uncontrollably after Senate saves her

Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza was overcome with emotion as the Senate Committee dropped the charges against her.

Mwangaza sobbed when panel chairperson Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale pronounced the verdict.

When the final judgement was given out in the Senate chambers, the governor was there.

On Wednesday, the panel ended its hearings before retiring to prepare its judgement.

On December 14, Kawira was impeached by 67 of the 69 MCAs present in the Meru County Assembly.

Ward representatives charged the governor with egregious misconduct and abuse of office, totaling five accusations.

On Tuesday, Kawira pleaded not guilty to the charges before the special committee saying she is a victim of blackmail.

The MCAs accused her of committing at least one constitutional violation on each of the 64 days she has been in power.

Through lawyer Muthomi Thiankolu, the assembly said there were 62 violations of the Constitution, all committed within 64 days.

“Her ouster revolves around gross violation of the Constitution and gross misconduct,” Thiankolu told the Senate Special Committee.

Kawira became the first county boss to be impeached barely three months after being sworn in.

All 67 Members of the County Assembly present during the impeachment session voted to remove her over abuse of office claims.
