Needy Student Reports To Form 1 With Cockerel As Payment For Ksh.48K Fee

A Form One pupil reporting to Kangaru School in Embu County arrived with her mother, carrying a cockerel as his way of paying secondary school fees.

Lawrence Murimi, 14, received 313 points in his KCPE exams and claims his uncle gave him the cockerel after he was initiated.

Lawrence said they were sent home to obtain the Ksh.48,000 required for school fees after travelling 5 kilometers to the school with his mother, Pauline Mukami, on Wednesday.

“I told my mother that since the cockerel that was given to me was the only thing that we can take to school after we tried knocking on all the doors seeking help but we couldn’t get any,” he narrated outside the school gate.

He went on to say that the cockerel was only worth Ksh.1,000, a pittance compared to the school costs required to get him in.

Ms. Mukami stated that after getting his son’s admittance letter, he began to visit all departments in search of assistance, but none was forthcoming.

She claimed that her kid was compelled to bring his old eighth-grade notebooks to high school.

The single mother, who lives in Embu’s Majengo Estate, is now appealing to well-wishers to help her son.
