Hardworking woman who went viral while pulling a mkokoteni has passed on

Everlyn Ndinyuka, the hardworking woman from Dagorreti who went viral after she was captured pulling a mkokoteni selling water in July 2021, has passed on.

Everlyn moved many Kenyans to their heartstrings after her photo showing how she had to work extremely hard so that she could provide for her children went viral online.

Famous philanthropist Wanja Mwaura who urged Kenyans to rescue her from hard labour earlier today, declared that the hard-working woman is no more.

Wanja said on social media that Ndinyuki passed away on March 21 following a brief illness.

“Remember mama Denno? (Everlyn Ndinyuka) A lady who was pulling a mkokoteni selling water? In July 2021, we joined hands and opened a cereal shop for her to relieve her from this hard labour.

Yesterday I received sad news that she passed on Tuesday night after a short illness. No plans have been made yet to lay her to rest. We pray for peace, especially for her children,” Wanja said.

Philanthropist Wanja Mwaura first highlighted the story of the woman identified as Everlyn Ndinyuka on June 10, 2021.

Via Facebook, Wanja called for help locating the woman spotted carrying jerrycans of water in the mkokoteni in Dagoretti.

Wanja managed to track down the woman down, and on June 14, she visited her alongside some well-wishers.

According to Wanja, Ndinyuka lived in a single room with five children. Two of them are her late sister’s kids, and one is her nephew.
How pulling the cart affected her health

During the visit, the well-wishers learned that pulling the handcart had taken a toll on Ndinyuka’s body.

“The tough work has weakened her body. As a result, she has severe pain in the back and legs,” Wanja wrote.

“It is not her wish to be pulling this cart, but circumstances forced her to do this. She would love to stop pulling this cart given a chance,” the philanthropist added.
