Twenty people injured after matatu rams into Expressway along Mombasa Road

Early on Tuesday, a minibus carrying twenty people collided with the Nairobi Expressway in Mombasa Road, injuring twenty of them.

According to the police, the matatu headed for Nairobi flipped over when it struck the barricade of the Expressway at Mlolongo in Machakos County.

At the time of the incident, the car was heading generally in the direction of Mombasa.

“A mini-bus from Ukambani hit the barricades of Expressway almost at the entrance of Expressway from Mombasa general direction. The vehicle overturned and about 20 passengers sustained minor injuries,” police told the Star hours after the incident.

The police said traffic officers from Embakasi police station responded to the scene, processed it and towed the wreckage to the same station pending inspection.

The Expressway on Mombasa Road is under Embakasi subcounty police station’s command.

“The vehicle veered off the road and overturned at Mlolongo early this morning right next to the Nairobi Expressway entrance,” the source said.

The victims were rushed to various hospitals.

The incident happened hours after a 14-passenger matatu overturned in Matungulu, Machakos county on Monday.

Matungulu subcounty police commander Peter Omondi said the vehicle veered off the road before it overturned along Nairobi – Kangundo Road.

“The driver was heading to Tala from Nairobi when he veered off the road and overturned. Seven people who were travelling in the vehicle sustained slight injuries and were rushed to Nguluni health centre all in fair condition,” Omondi said.
