Japheth Koome Nominated to replace Mutyambai as IG

Eng. Japheth Koome Nchebere has been proposed by President William Ruto for the job of Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The Commandant of the National Police Service College, Kiganjo, is Mr. Koome, a former commander of the Nairobi County Police.

His appointment follows the decision by departing Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, who is fighting illness, to take terminal leave before his tenure in office expired.

Tuesday at State House, President Ruto unveiled his cabinet and stated that Mutyambai had asked to go on terminal leave.

“I have after discussing with Mr Mutyambai and in consideration of his service to our nation and his health situation, accepted that Mr. Mutyambai will proceed on terminal leave,” said Ruto.

Mutyambai had six months left on his contract as Inspector General of Police.

He was admitted to the Aga Khan Hospital’s High Dependence Unit after falling sick in August.

A few weeks ago, he was moved to the general ward after his health stabilised.

Mutyambai was appointed Police IG by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in April 2019.

He replaced Joseph Boinnet who was picked from the National Intelligence Service (NIS) as David Kimaiyo’s replacement.
