Ex-CS Amina Mohamed lands Commonwealth job

Amina Mohamed, a former cabinet secretary for sports, has been named the Special Envoy for Sports, Enterprise, and Development by the Commonwealth Secretary-General.

According to a letter from Patricia Scotland, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Amina was hired because of her extensive professional background.

“I write to thank you for kindly accepting my invitation to be the Commonwealth Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Sports, Enterprise, and Development,” the letter said.

“Your professional background and extensive experience as an international civil servant, diplomat, government minister in areas of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation; Sports, Heritage & Culture; Girls Education and in Foreign Affairs combine to make you eminently qualified to fulfill this role.”

From March 2019 to November 2022, Amina—a career diplomat and trained lawyer—served as Sports CS.

When the Safari Rally made a comeback to the World Rally Championship schedule in 2021, she was in charge.

Under Amina’s direction, Kenya became the first nation in Africa to host the Continental Gold Tour (also known as the Kip Keino Classic Continental Tour).

From May 2013 to February 2018, she served as the CS for Foreign Affairs, and from February 2018 to March 2019, she was the CS for Education.

Amina has held positions as assistant secretary-general and deputy executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme, as well as chairlady of the General Councils of the International Organization for Migration and the World Trade Organization.
