Juliana Cherera: The Story of Ex-Primary School Teacher Who Disowned Chebukati’s Results

Juliana Cherera has been a topic of discussion since yesterday when she courageously led three IEBC other commissioners in disowning Chebukati’s final presidential results.

What made her look more daring is that she was holding a separate press briefing when Chebukati was announcing William Ruto as the president-elect.

Her move divided Kenyans into two, with Raila Odinga’s supporters upholding their disowning decision and Ruto’s supporters criticizing her.

But, who is this lady that Kenyans will not stop talking about?

Mkenya Leo compiled information about her profile you should know about.

Work and Experience

Cherera boasts of over 18 years of experience in education and the public sector.

She started her career as a high-school teacher. However, the schools she has taught are still unknown because she prefers keeping her life story private.

She is the vice chair of the IEBC. She joined the commission in late 2021 when the country was preparing for the August 2022 general elections. She replaced Nkatha Buka who left the commission shortly after the 2017 elections. In her interview with the public service board, Cherera promised to improve voters’ education and sensitization.

Before working for the IEBC, Chirera worked for Mombasa County Government as the Chief Executive in the Strategic Delivery Unit. She also worked as the secretary for Mombasa County Economic Recovery and Legacy Strategy. These roles explain photos of her in former Mombasa County Governor Hassan Joho’s events. The photos are going around in the social media streets, with rumors that she was paid by Joho to disown Ruto’s win.

Cherera has also worked with Mombasa County Emergency Household Relief and Nutrition Support Project Coordination Committee.

Educational Background

Cherera is well educated. She holds a Master’s Degree in education, leadership, and educational management from Kenya Methodist University. She earned her degree in education from Kenyatta University. Other educational qualifications she holds include Project Management and Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE).

Net Worth

Cherera is worth Ksh 16.6 million. During her interview for her current position, she revealed that she owns 11 acres of land in Kwale County and 1.5 acres of land in Kilifi. She also owns pieces of land in Meru and Mackinnon. Among other properties, she owns include Ksh 3 million worth of the house in Mtwapa, Ksh 328, 000 shares at Mwalimu Sacco, and a Ksh 2.4 million ride.

Family, Marital Status, and Ethnic Background

Very little is known of Cherera’s personal life. She has managed to keep her family life private.

However, Mkenya Leo has determined that she is a Coastarian, owing to her name Cherera, which hails from the Giriama tribe of the Mijikenda community.
