Two REA employees jailed for 6 years for forging academic certificates to get gov’t jobs

Two women have been jailed for 6 years after being found guilty of forging academic certificates to get employed at the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REA) in 2018.

According to reports by the EACC, Pauline Otieno & Lilian Ochieng forged certificates from Mount Kenya University (MKU) and Kenya Institute of Management (KISM) respectively.

“Pauline Otieno &Lilian Ochieng jailed for forging MKU and KISM certificates to gain employment. Pauline- 2yrs 6 months or pay KES.228,698. Lilian- 3yrs 6 months or pay KES.271,901,” reads EACC reports.

They faced the following criminal charges:

Forgery; – Providing false information to a public entity; Deceiving a public entity; Uttering a false document; and Fraudulent acquisition of public property being the cumulative salary earned on forged certificates.

The court has directed them to refund all salary earned on fake certificates.

“Pauline forged a Certificate in Procurement from Mount Kenya University (MKU) while Lilian forged both a Diploma and Certificate from the Kenya Institute of Management (KISM). They were employed at the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation in 2018.

Before formal employment, Pauline and Lilian had worked in the Corporation for 8 years as casual employees. They were formally employed as Supplies Assistants after forging the said academic certificates. Prior to investigations, they had served for 2 months,” EACC reports.
