For many people, good academic grades have been associated with success in life.
Poor academic performance has long been equated with failure.
The situation has changed, though. This idea has been refuted by a lot of famous people. Their prosperous lifestyles serve as evidence that, despite our poor academic performance, nothing is lost.
Let’s have a look at some prominent Kenyans who succeeded despite dropping out of school…
Maina Kageni
Think about Maina Kageni. Maina Kageni, a former car trader and KTN news reporter who attended Laiser Hill for high school, traveled to the UK to pursue his undergraduate education.
But the top radio personality skipped college and began working as a truck driver and fish distributor for a Chinese company instead.
His mother was astonished to see that her son’s name was not on the list of graduates when she arrived for his graduation. She departed feeling let down and forbade him from returning to Nairobi.
Maina is fortunate that everything worked out well because he now enjoys a comfortable existence. He socializes with A-listers while driving slick vehicles. The Classic FM Breakfast Show also organizes vacations in opulent places around the world.
“Life offered great opportunities. You learn lessons that no school can ever teach you,” he said.
DJ Kaytrixx
DJ Kaytrixx is a superb dropout as well. After receiving a B- in the KCSE at Allidina Visram High, Kaytrixx enrolled in Moi University with the goal of earning an engineering degree.
However, he left school after three years in order to pursue a career as a DJ.
“My mind was always set on deejaying and felt like school was a waste of my time. The whole school process was slowing me down. I wanted to make money,” he said.
He used to make Sh200 each night at the neighborhood clubhouse for Moi University, but these days he bills between Sh60,000 and Sh120,000 per night.
Njenga Karume
The late politician Njenga Karume also possessed unquestionable entrepreneurial genius. His biography, Beyond Expectations: From Charcoal to Gold, contains extensive documentation of his Midas touch. Karume didn’t gain anything from his official education.
But that didn’t matter because he proved to be a cunning politician and businessman.
However, controversial billionaire Deepak Kamani admitted to never enjoying school in an interview with a local newspaper.
Even in swimming, he was the last student in the class. He left school in form two to work at his father’s vehicle repair business.
