Traffic officer dies in Mombasa after speeding motorist runs over him

A driver who was trying to elude a traffic stop in Mombasa ran over a traffic police officer, killing him.

A police report from Tuesday stated that Julius Marwa was directing traffic at the Buxton junction when he flagged down a driver to conduct a traffic check.

Osman Jama Abdi, the driver of a silver Toyota Ractis, refused to turn the engine off so that officer Marwa could perform the inspection.

When Officer Marwa went to close the ignition after opening the driver’s door, Abdi allegedly grabbed his hand and accelerated away.

After driving for a distance of about 200 meters Marwa is said to have been pushed out of the car and got run over by the rear right wheel, sustaining a head injury and multiple fractures on the pelvic.

“He was rushed to Jocham hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” read part of the statement.

His body has been taken to the hospital’s mortuary awaiting postmortem.

Subsequent investigations led to the Abdi’s arrest who was found locked inside his car at a basement parking within beach road estate in Nyali.

The car was towed to Makupa Police Station where Abdi is also detained.
