Wafula Chebukati Announces Possible Postponement of Elections in Some Areas

Elections in some districts where candidates are being sued may be postponed, according to Wafula Chebukati, chair of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Speaking on Saturday, July 9, Chebukati stated that the commission was concerned due to the ongoing legal matters and the judiciary’s inability to provide guidance.

He requested Chief Justice Martha Koome to hasten the cases’ resolution in order to prevent a holdup in the printing of the ballots.

Chebukati also issued a warning that the organization might be compelled to postpone elections in regions where there are 31 conflicts.

“If for any reason they (court cases) are not finalized in good time, as a commission we cannot wait forever, we shall be forced to suspend elections in those areas where decisions affect the printing of ballot papers. We must deliver elections on August 9,” Wafula said.

Speaking about election preparation and management, Chebukati said that the commission will just declare the winner and will not challenge the results at the voting places.

“Results at polling stations are final. The commission will only declare the winner but the results are not the preserve of the commission,” he reiterated.

“The media will have access to results both at the tally centres & at the polling stations,” Chebukati added.
