Roselyne Akombe Reacts to the Mysterious Death of Gichungu Returning Officer Geoffrey Gitobu

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioner Dr. Roselyn Akombe has reacted to the sudden and mysterious death of Gichungu returning officer Geoffery Gitobu.

Gitobu had allegedly been sent by Kirinyaga County returning officer to photocopy some electoral documents at an electoral agency in Nanyuki when he collapsed. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Speaking on her Twitter handle, Akombe condoled with Gitobu’s family.

She wrote, “No words to describe the pain of yet another loss of a public servant who was serving his country. Lost for any words to condole the family of Gitobu and the IEBC staff.”

She went on to urge a speedy investigation process to determine the cause of Gitobu’s death. She then concluded her tweet by asking Kenyans to stop the killings of IEBC officials, who are only doing their job.

“While we await the cause of this sudden death, it is time to stop these senseless incidents,” she wrote.

Gitobu’s death comes nearly a week after Embakasi East returning officer, Daniel Musyoka was reported missing and later found dead after being brutally murdered.

The probe to find Musyoka’s murderers is still ongoing.

Moreover, A Wajir IEBC official was amputated on his right leg after he was shot for allegedly refusing to favor a candidate.

It will be remembered that Akombe sneaked out of the country to resign from the commission in 2017, fearing for her life after IEBC ICT manager Chris Msando was found murdered.

In her resignation statement, Akombe wrote, “I have tried the best I could do given the circumstances. Sometimes, you walk away, especially when potentially lives are at stake.”
