Didmus Barasa flees to Uganda after the shooting incident

Police are still hunting for Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa in connection with a shooting on election day that claimed the life of a rival’s assistant.

The MP had not turned himself in as instructed by Wednesday morning, according to police handling the situation.

Barasa and his challenger Brian Khaemba of the DAP were involved in the altercation at the Chebukwabi polling place where they were supposed to see the vote count.

DCI Joseph Ondoro, the head of Bungoma, claimed they had searched in vain in a number of locations.

“We suspect he took a motorcycle towards Uganda but we will get him. He is yet to be arrested,” he said Wednesday morning.

He claimed that when a fight between the two broke out, Khaemba was forced to leave and go to his car.

“Barasa followed him in the company of four men and ordered them not to allow him (Khaemba) to leave the place but Khaemba’s driver Joshua Nasokho defied the order and ignited the vehicle,” said Ondoro.

At that point, Barasa allegedly pulled a gun and pointed it at Brian Olunga, Khaemba’s assistant.

It’s believed that he shot the man in the forehead.

When he arrived at the Kimilili sub-county hospital, he was already dead.

According to Ondoro, Barasa was wanted for questioning on the incident.

“He has run away but we are looking for him. Let him surrender,” he said.

A backup team has been sent to the area to look for the MP.
