Just like any other couple, Rachel Ruto and President William Ruto have their story of how they met.

Walking down the memory lane, Ruto, had in a previous interview, about 10 years ago, said he met the love of his life in the church where they both attended.

“She was a member of the choir like me, we were both members of an Evangelistic team called North Rift evangelistic team,” he said.

Ruto said he was an evangelist at the time.

“We used to go for missions together in various places. She did a course in education,” he said.

Rachael, after her secondary education at Butere Girls High School, studied Bachelor of Education Degree at Kenyatta University.

“She was posted to Kessup girls for teaching practice and I was generally around and that is where our love history grew from. The rest is history,” Ruto said.

Rachel and Ruto got married in 1991 and are currently raising seven children.

In 2016, Ruto was touched by the story of a girl called Nadia who was abandoned as a newborn and gave her the name of his mother, Cherono.

“The story of Nadia who was found buried, her body partly decomposing and abandoned as a newborn and has been under the care of Sisters at Madre Ippolata Children’s Home touched my heart. I have named her Cherono, after my mother and made her part of my family,” he said on his Facebook post.

In December 2020, Ruto and Rachel celebrated their marriage anniversary in 52 orphanages in Uasin Gishu County. He was also celebrating their birthdays.

Ruto who was marking his 54th birthday and 28 years of marriage at his Sugoi home, urged Kenyan families to help those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Ruto was declared the president-elect and Rachel is no doubt a heartbeat away from being Kenya’s next first lady.

Her humble demeanour coupled with her religious attributes has earned her the admiration of many.

For Ruto, his meteoric rise and rise in the political space is credited to Rachel’s prayers.
