Meet the 76 year old Jubilee Candidate vying to replace Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua

Phyllis Wambura Maranga, a Mathira member of parliament prospect, has expressed confidence in winning the seat after his major challenger Rigathi Gachagua, who was seeking a second term, sought to deputize William Ruto in the presidential contest.

Maranga, also known as Shosh, has been given a direct ticket by the Jubilee party in a contest in which she hopes to win.

Wambura came in second in the 2017 elections, after Gachagua made history as the constituency’s first female candidate.

The 76-year-old has also guaranteed Mathira fair representation if she wins the seat, noting that Gachagua’s departure has made her job easier.

“In 2017 I came second to Gachagua and now that he is out of the way this seat is mine. I will demonstrate that even Shosh can win a parliamentary seat and I will represent the people of Mathira very well,” Maranga said.

Shosh has previously rebuffed suggestions that she is pursuing money, claiming that at her age, development is what she is interested in.

“I am not out to make money. At my age, all I want is for the constituency to develop to international standards,” Maranga stated.

Maranga, on the other hand, will have to defeat former parliamentarian Peter Weru, Waruru Gikandi, and United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Eric Wamumbi.

On May 21, Wamumbi was launched in Nyeri during a political rally presided over by DP Ruto.

Following the controversial death of his wife, Catherine Nyambura, in May 2020, the legislator was the subject of an investigation, with detectives stepping in to solve the mystery and summoning him to record a statement.

On May 24, 2022, the body of his deceased wife was discovered in Mathira’s Hohwe dam.
