Ruto breaks silence after Uhuru denied him a chance to speak at Madaraka Day

Deputy President William Ruto has tweeted his first statement a few hours after President Uhuru Kenyatta denied him a chance to speak at Madaraka Day celebration at Uhuru Gardens.
In a statement on his twitter account, Ruto appeared to play down the humiliation he faced during the celebrations.

“Today we celebrate 59 years of Madaraka but we must not forget that we are responsible for the next years ahead, we are the makers of this nation, let us choose a path of progress, unity and prosperity,” he tweeted.

It is customary in Kenya for the Deputy President to speak first, and then the President to address the nation.

However, in the 59th Madaraka Day celebration, this was not the case. The President went straight to address the country after bestowing state honors on a number of Kenyans., skipping his deputy Ruto.

Uhuru also snubbed his deputy as he recognized the dignitaries in attendance, which was telling. Following the acknowledgment, Uhuru invited the principal guest, Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio, to speak to Kenyans.

“Before I talk, I want to invite Sierra Leon president to make his remarks,” Uhuru said.A programme of 59th Madaraka Day celebrations showed that Ruto was not accommodated in the programme.

After the award of State investiture, the next item in the order was simply “State Address” after which the National Anthem will be played then the ceremony comes to a closure.
