UPDATE: Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru elected as Council of Governor Chairperson

Governor Anne Mumbi Waiguru of Kirinyaga has been chosen to lead the Council of Governors (CoG).

In a secret vote held on Saturday, September 17, Waiguru easily defeated her Kajiado opponent Joseph Ole Lenku.

Martin Wambora, the departing governor of Embu, was succeeded as CoG leader by the second-term governor, who received the majority of the votes cast.

Governor of the Wajir region Mohamed Abdi Mohamud will act in Waiguru’s place.

Waiguru had earlier encouraged other governors to support her run, claiming that her experience as the Devolution Cabinet Secretary made her the best-suited candidate. Waiguru was fronted by Kenya Kwanza, led by President William Ruto.

Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire and Senior Counsel Abdullahi Ahmednassir were among the first leaders to congratulate Waiguru.

“Congratulations, governor Anne Waiguru on your election as the chair of the Council of Governors (COG).

“We continue to shatter the glass ceiling day by day. Lead us to the next level my sister,” Mbarire congratulated.

Waiguru will chair the Intergovernmental Budget Executive Council headed by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Other than representing the other 46 governors, she will also oversee a mechanism for consultation amongst County Governments and facilitating capacity building for Governors.

The former CS will also provide leadership in consideration of reports from other intergovernmental forums on national and county interests.
