Winnie Odinga Breaks Silence Over Nomination to EALA

Winnie Odinga has downplayed allegations that the Orange Democratic Movement – ODM – had nominated her for the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

Winnie, the daughter of former Kenyan leader Raila Odinga, stated in a statement on Wednesday, October 19, that she had not expressed any interest in running for government or even serving in the regional parliament.

She continued by saying that she had not spoken with the orange party to advocate for the said position.

“I have not applied for EALA nor has any official communication come from the party,” she stated.

ODM’s Director of Communication Philip Etale backed up her claim by stating that the party hasn’t done any business involving the house.

“As far as I am concerned, nominations to EALA have not been done. Thanks,” Etale said.

Winnie asserted that a candidate for cabinet secretary who felt intimidated by her was the source of the false information.

She questioned why powerful women concerned society.

“You can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful but not too successful, otherwise, you will threaten the man. And then we do a much greater disservice to girls because we raise them to cater to the fragile egos of males. We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller,” she stated.

Following the August elections, Winne—who oversaw communications and operations throughout Odinga’s campaign—told the public what she had been up to.

She also issued a list of the team behind the Azimio coalition party leader’s campaigns amid a blame-game over who was to blame for her father’s defeat to President William Ruto.

Before, Raila Odinga Campaign Secretariat Spokesperson Makau Mutua asked those who were criticizing Winnie to stop, saying that she was still a young woman in the complicated world of politics.
