Viral Drunk Police Officer Commits Suicide After Disciplinary Investigation

Police have established that a Buruburu police officer who was seen on film on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, wobbling along the road while intoxicated and armed, committed suicide.

Constable Harrison Mugo’s body was discovered hanging inside a burned-out former police canteen on Thursday morning.

Salim Onteri, the station groundskeeper, noticed the body hanging from the rafters while performing routine activities close to the canteen and alerted the station commander.

“The body had no visible physical injuries and no suicide note was found. The deceased officer was the one whose clip went viral yesterday (Wednesday) after he was filmed being drunk and disorderly while in police uniform and disciplinary action had been taken against him,” a police report seen by MkenyaLeo reads.

The deceased cop was seen returning to the station while carrying an AK47 assault rifle in the viral footage. He once fell and needed assistance getting up from two bystanders. He is then seen being carried by the two people to a matatu that is parked beside the road.

Several hours after the video went viral, Bruno Shioso, a spokesman for the NPS, denounced the inebriated officer and called his actions unbecoming, unacceptable, and unprofessional.

“This is to assure the public that this behaviour is unbecoming, unacceptable, and unprofessional. NPS hence condemns it in the strongest terms possible. A uniformed police officer is a visible representation and face of government and is required to remain extremely disciplined and professional while on duty and off duty,” NPS said.

“As NPS, we hold our officers accountable with regard to matters of discipline, decorum, and conduct to ensure efficient and effective service provision to the public,” he added.
