A TikToker in Uganda was sentenced to six years in prison for insulting President Yoweri Museveni and his family after recording a video and uploading it, pleading guilty at his own request.
He was charged with posting a video on TikTok in which he made obscene and derogatory remarks about the Head of State, his wife Janet, and their First Son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is also the Commander of the UPDF.
A resident of Nama in Mukono District, Awebwa was arrested last week and brought to court where he admitted to all four charges read against him.
The Magistrate sentenced Awebwa to six years for each offense. However, he will serve all four sentences concurrently.
In her ruling, the Magistrate stated that she did not give the suspect a higher punishment due to his young age and the fact that the court did not waste time in handling the case.
The prosecution, led by Janet Kitumbo, had requested a heavier sentence as a deterrent to other youths who continue to misuse social media platforms.
