Tanzanian singer and WCB Wasafi signee Zanele Muholi has joined the expanding list of African artists whose albums, EPs, and photos have been shown in Times Square in New York, one of the world’s busiest advertising sites.

The vocalist was featured on Times Square billboards on Thursday, May 26, 2022, just days after being chosen ambassador of the month (May) by Spotify’s EQUAL Music initiative.

“Your girl lighting up the Newyork Times Square partnering with Spotify as The #EQUALAFRICA Ambassador of the Month. Go now On Spotify click the link to listen to all my Music,” an excited Zuchu while sharing her Times Square images.

Zuchu was just announced as the EQUAL ambassador for the month of May. The EQUAL initiative aims to promote gender equality in music by highlighting and celebrating exceptional African women who are making waves in the industry.

“In addition to exposing me to the musical power that can come from the female experience, women in song have also helped me realise that we can overcome the setbacks that are part-and-parcel of working in the male-dominated world of Afrobeats,” Zuchu remarked

The Nyumba Ndogo singer went on to say that being a part of the EQUAL program has given her music career a huge boost.

Zuchu was the third female musician from East Africa to be featured on EQUAL and Times Square.
Muthoni Drummer Queen and Sylvia Ssaru were the first two performers.

In the Midtown Manhattan portion of New York City, Times Square is a prominent business crossroads, tourist destination, entertainment center, and neighborhood.

Edrisah Musuuza alias Eddy Kenzo, a Ugandan musician, became the first East African artist to be featured on a billboard in New York City’s Times Square.

Bahati, Rayvanny, Mbosso, Ssuru Diamond Platnumz, and Muthoni Drummer Queen are among the East African artists whose albums or songs have been advertised on Time Square billboards.
