A man impersonating controversial politician Mike Sonko has been arrested by DCI agents for defrauding people.
Newton Paul Kengere, 29, has been fooling people on social media by pretending to be Mike Sonko and making false promises to grant loans, according to the DCI.
Newton- The phone Paul Kengere had been using to send alluring messages to targets who were deemed vulnerable was discovered, along with multiple sim cards, when he was apprehended in Riokindo Ward of Kisii within the Kenyenya sub-county.
Businessman Mike Sonko reportedly reported to the Nairobi police station last year that a lot of people were impersonating him on social media.
Kengere was abusing the chance presented by Sonko’s images on his social media profile to steal from the poor, including those
“Kengere continued and wrote messages asking people who are interested to register with Sh1,000 for the initial loans which he said, cannot collect any interest.
To get a loan, “applicants” had to send their ID numbers, full names, location and state the purpose.”
“However, after receiving the registration fees, Kengere would quickly transition from a caller to saying, “Patience pays”.
The statement was that all his targets would give their Sh1,000,” DCI said.
He is being handled by the DCI Nairobi Crime and Intelligence Research Unit team before he is brought before the court on Friday, January 19. The team searched his village for him.
