Mathew Nyamlori Aol: The man who spent 22 years in primary, got a degree but still jobless

Matthew Nyamlori Aol’s educational career has been long and complicated. He has, on the other hand, been unbowed and unbent for the nine times he has taken the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) national test, which is held once a year.

His determination and hard work paid off in July 2021, when he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Policy and Administration from Kenyatta University.

Nyamlori attended primary school for a record-breaking 22 years.

In 1998, he took the KCPE test for the first time and received an admission letter to Kabianga High School with a score of 478 out of 700.

In 2004, he took the KCPE exams for the third time and received a perfect score of 434. He was accepted to Maseno School but was unable to enroll due to a lack of funds.

Nearly four months later, the Maseno School Principal understood and allowed him to join the other Form One students. He would drop out of Form Two the following year since he had not paid any fees since his entrance the year before.

When he decided to go to Nairobi and try his hand at menial occupations in 2007, the never-ending cycle came close to coming to an end.

The urge to excel in academia didn’t see that happening since he went back to different primary schools and sat for successive KCPE exams from the year 2008 to 2010. In all the attempts Nyamlori gained national school admissions on merit.

When Equity Bank’s Wings To Fly program offered Nyamlori a scholarship in 2011, the stars aligned in his favor. This fortunate fortune arrived after he took the KCPE exam for the ninth time.
