Man, wife charged with trying to export ants to China and France without KWS approval

Three suspects, including a man and his wife, were charged on Monday at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi for allegedly attempting to export ants.

Martin Nyota, his wife Rose Wairimu and Eunice Muthoni, an employee of postal corporation, were accused of trying to export the harvester ants worth Ksh.300,000 to China and France without the authority of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

Appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Njeri Thuku, the accused were charged with five counts of dealing with live wildlife species.

They denied the charges and were released on a Ksh.50,000 cash bail.

The court was told that the accused were found in possession of the ants at their home in Gilgil.
