Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has released the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results, revealing a notable improvement in student performance from the 2022 cohort.
1,216 students scored an A grade, compared to 1,146 in 2022.
The results showed a total of 201,133 students achieved a C+ or above, the minimum university entry qualification, compared to 173,345 in 2022.
The rise is attributed to the changed grading system implemented in the examination, which saw a rise in students from National schools to private schools.
Those candidates who scored D+ and above were 526,222 compared to 522,588 in 2022.
There was however a huge number of candidates who scored an E recorded at 48,174 to which Machogu called for an immediate probe to ascertain the unsettling numbers.
“I order the directorate of quality assurance to work with field officers and teachers to investigate these E Grade cases in each county of the country and submit a report to me within one month for further action,” he said.
Further, a total of 4,113 candidates were reported to have been involved in exam irregularities. Of these four candidates have had their results cancelled following impersonation reports.
For the remaining 4,109 candidates, their results will remain withheld pending the completion of investigations and will know their fate in 20 days.
One will be required to enter the candidate’s index number and the name(s) as per their registration data for the 2023 KCSE examination.
