Ababu Namwamba says Tanzania can still win AFCON: “Anything is possible in football”
According to Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, Tanzania’s Taifa Stars have a chance to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals, which are presently taking place in Ivory Coast.
On Wednesday, January 17, Namwamba claimed that Taifa Stars, who were initially thought to be among the tournament’s weakest teams, could pull off an upset and win the championship during his analysis on Kenya’s national broadcaster.
Namwamba stated, “Anything is possible in football. If recent history has taught us anything, it is that there are no more underdogs in football. I am East African. The East African in me is urging Tanzania, telling them, I believe you can put up a good fight.”
Tanzania had participated in six games at the continental championship before losing 3-0 to Morocco on Thursday. Out of these six, they lost five and only managed a draw (in 1980). A victory is still out of reach.
The East African nation placed last in the group in both the 1980 and 2019 editions. Namwamba, on the other hand, is standing by his neighbors and refusing to let history define him.
“Everybody can pretty much beat everybody. No one gave Morocco a chance during the World Cup in Qatar, but they went all the way to the semi-finals. Nothing stops Tanzania from doing well,” remarked the Sports CS.
