Kalonzo Withdraws from the National Assembly Speaker Contest

Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has withdrawn from the National Assembly and Senate contests after the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) advise.

According to Wiper’s NEC, the former vice president would be humiliated if he proceeds to vie for the posts.

For Thursday, September 8, when the 13th Assembly convenes, the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party and the Kenya Kwanza Alliance are organizing parliamentary groups.

On Thursday, the first item on the agenda will be to pick Speakers when all members of the two Houses have been sworn in.

The Wiper NEC met on Tuesday, September 6 at the party’s headquarters.

During the meeting, the NEC members unanimously convinced Kalonzo to drop his bid for the Speaker and instead focus on building his brand.

NTV Kenya reported that according to sources within the Wiper NEC, most MPs felt Kalonzo would be humiliated if he ran for the Speaker position.

Most MPs feel the numbers don’t favour the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party, given that most of their colleagues have defected to Kenya Kwanza.

Kalonzo had picked the National Assembly and Senate Speaker’s position of nomination papers.

The exit of Kalonzo is now giving Kenya Kwanza’s choice Moses Wetang’ula, a significant boost.

The Ford Kenya party leader spent the better part of Tuesday at the IEBC, ensuring his resignation as a senator was received and effected.
