Colonel Mustafa: How I went broke despite earning millions

Daudi Mustafa, better known by his stage name Colonel Mustafa, went viral recently after it was discovered that he was working at a construction site to support himself.

His viral video elicited conflicting responses from Kenyans on social media.

The rapper, who was a member of the rap trio Deux Vultures that also featured Nasty Thomas, was at the height of his powers one of Kenya’s best rappers.

Monalisa and Adhiambo C, two songs the group released, won over Kenyan listeners.

Each musician left the Deux Vultures group and went his own way.

According to Who Owns Kenya, Mustafa found job as a copywriter at Scanad, which allowed him to enter the corporate world.

He received a monthly salary of KSh 250,000 while working for the company.

In addition to working at Scanad, he also earned an average of KSh 700,000 every month by writing jingles for other brands. His overall income increased to KSh 950,000 as a result.

“I was a copywriter getting KSh 250,000 every month. And then, I also believed that it didn’t hurt to present a jingle idea to any of the client services within whatever account at any agency, so I was a supplier.”

Mustafa revealed that despite earning close to a million, he ended up with many debts.

“In a month I would write at least ten jingles for different brands and it would give me let’s say, KSh 700,000 extra. Money was never the issue but I never saw that money because my spirituality wasn’t lit. That money ended up creating more debts.

The musician recalled how he lost his job after an argument with his bosses over a client he alleged got a raw deal.

“There were people who were giving the client a raw deal at that time. I said something I shouldn’t have said, or rather I said it innocently and it offended one of the bosses,” he disclosed.

As a result, he could not afford to pay school fees for his daughter who was forced to stay at home for three months.

After the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) disconnected electricity at his home over pending bills, things went south when auctioneers raided his home. They took away his car and title deeds to some parcels of land he had purchased.
