Police arrest two suspects linked to Rongai robbery caught on CCTV

Police have arrested two people who are linked to the Sunday, June 12 2022 incident where a woman was robbed at gunpoint in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County.

According to reports, the suspects are being interrogated to help them get more information.

“We have so far arrested two suspects. We are interrogating them for more information,” the officer said.

Reports indicate that the armed men who attacked a female motorist at the gate of her Ongata Rongai home were headed by a former rogue police officer.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the criminals who terrorized the woman are led by a former cop,” a senior Kajiado police officer told the media.

The AK47 rifle-wielding gang was seen on camera attacking a woman as she drove into her Rongai home.

They then stole money from her, which they later transferred to a Mwiki agent.

At least four of the thugs have been identified and are being pursued by detectives.

Two of the thugs are seen brandishing handguns, one an AK-47, and the other a machete, which he used to break the window of the lady’s car in the 2:00 a.m. incident footage that has since gone popular on social media.

One of the men, who was wearing a balaclava, is seen breaking the driver’s window with the pistol and dragging the lady out.

The guys also took her to her house, which they searched for valuables. One of the goons is seen in another video disconnecting a sound bar speaker as another walks out of the room.

Following the incident, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai paid a visit to the region.

The tour was a fact-finding trip focused on security issues.
Dr. Matiangi ordered that work on the Kandisi police post begin immediately and be upgraded to a police station later.

A special squad of SSU detectives has been dispatched to the area to work alongside their local colleagues.
Gitari, a Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), will be in charge of the area’s security activities.

The CS ordered that all criminal activity documented in Occurrence Books (OB) be collated and delivered to his office by tomorrow in order to acquire a better picture of the security situation in the area.

“Entertainment joints and restaurants should not operate in between Kandisi and Rimpa stage as it’s the purely residential area hosting various senior government officials,” the brief to officers read.

A special team is expected to visit the scene to analyse the CCTV camera footage even as the CS urged the locals to volunteer information to the security officers.

Ngong Sub-County Police Commander Mecha Mogeni said they had crucial leads on the attack, especially regarding who the perpetrators were and who are hunting them.

“We have launched investigations and we have very crucial leads on who the perpetrators are. Let us give them time so that we catch them up and use it as an example,” Mogeni said.

Further, the OCPD said the thugs took away valuable household items from the house though no one was injured.

“Various household items were stolen from the house but no injuries were reported,” he added.

The local residents have in the past been complaining of rising cases of insecurity and have urged the police to act.

Detectives have so far arrested two suspects in connection to the robbery, with the first suspect arrested in Kasarani where he had withdrawn a total of Ksh240,000 from the victim’s account at a shop in Mwiki, Kasarani.

The Mpesa agent, from where the cash was withdrawn was also arrested and is being interrogated. The man, who is the main suspect behind the daring attack is believed to be a former rogue police officer.
