Kenyans scramble for Unga after lorry overtuns on Mombasa Road (VIDEO)

After a lorry carrying the product collapsed on Friday, September 23, locals and onlookers on Mombasa Road scurried for bales of unga.

As seen in a video becoming viral online, the lorry flipped close to the Ole Sereni Hotel at the Southern Bypass junction.

Bales of maize flour were left lying along the highway after the collision, some of which had spilled into the drainage.

Boda boda riders packing the bales on their motorcycles were in front of the line. In an effort to compete for the commodity, which is now selling for between Ksh200 and Ksh250 for a 2 kilogram packet, some drivers also got out of their cars.

Some of the lanes of Mombasa Road were closed by the confusion, which disrupted traffic on the congested route.

The accident’s origin, nevertheless, had not yet been determined. By the time of publication, the police had also not yet released a statement regarding the incident.

Despite the government releasing billions of dollars to subsidize the goods, maize flour prices reached a record high in 2022.

Kenyans have been squeezing every last cent out of their wallets to buy maize flour, which was prominently promoted in the advertisements.

President William Ruto said that only a small group of dishonest people had benefited from the subsidies that had been released.

Ruto reduced the price of farm products from Ksh6,500 to Ksh3,500 per 50kg bag in an effort to lower the price of maize flour. He also announced a Ksh3.5 billion fertilizer subsidy.
