Several people feared dead after storey building collapses in Muranga
Several people were trapped under a three-storey building under construction at the Sagana area in Murang’a Town on Monday, June 19.
Three individuals were rescued and rushed to the hospital after the evacuation began around 5:00 pm.
The search and rescue mission is currently underway, with residents and emergency service providers joining hands to comb through the debris.
More than 10 individuals who were working at the site were feared to have been buried by debris after the building collapsed.
Muranga County Governor Irungu Kang’ata confirmed the incident in a statement noting that the construction of the building had been approved in 2021 according to the county records.
He questioned why certain measures had not been taken into account before the approval including the location of the construction.
“This building was approved in 2021 according to our records. Better approval considerations should have been made taking into account the area is riparian. Action will be taken against any culprit involved in such approval.
“Murang’a County Government expresses condolences to the families of persons affected by this unfortunate incident. We share in their grief,” Kang’ata stated.
