A student from Pwani University who survived the horrifying traffic accident that occurred on March 30, 2023 passed away while being treated at Kenyatta National Hospital.

Over ten students from the Kilifi-based university were killed in the disaster, and Bruce Amenya spent weeks battling for his life in the hospital.

“Bruce Amenya, one of those who was involved in a grisly road accident in Naivasha, passed on yesterday at Kenyatta National Hospital. He was part of the Hockey players. Rest In Peace Bruce. Till we meet again,” a friend identified as Justine Charo Bayah shared the news.

“As a team, we will continue to honour Bruce’s memory and legacy. Let us take a moment to remember the good times we shared with Bruce and offer our condolences to those who were close to him,” read a statement from Kennedy Kyalo, Secretary General Mvita XI Hockey Club.

On that fatal day, a matatu and a bus from Pwani University crashed near the Kayole Bridge on the Naivasha-Nakuru road. The students were traveling to the Chepkoilel campus for a national sporting event, according to James Kahindi, deputy vice chancellor of Pwani University.

The driver made every effort to regain control of the car, according to accident survivors, but the brakes failed.

16 people died as a result of the accident

Before the Pwani University bus grounded to a halt in the Kayole area accident in Naivasha, the driver had made frantic attempts to dodge the fate.

Survivors of the grisly accident that claimed the lives of seven students and three staff who were aboard the bus said the driver tried his best to take control of the vehicle but the brakes failed.

The driver is said to have advised students to put on their safety belts after seemingly realizing things were getting out of his control.

“It was bad luck that the brakes of our bus failed. The driver asked all of us to put on safety belts. Seemingly, he knew what was going to happen,” a survivor recounted in an interview with the media.

“He tried controlling the vehicle and even aimed to hit bumps to bring it to a halt but that never worked.”

The accident which occurred on Thursday has been linked to the failed brakes.

16 people died as a result of the accident.

Over 60 people were seriously injured and taken to Naivasha sub-county hospital before some were later transferred to Nakuru for specialised treatment.
