Nairobi’s Majengo and Pumwani neighborhoods were thrown into chaos early Wednesday morning as residents took to the streets in protest following the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy during a police operation.
The Form Three student was allegedly shot on Tuesday night in an altercation involving undercover police officers and a group of youths.
How It Started: A Night of Tension
According to Nairobi police commander George Sedah, the confrontation began on Tuesday night near Majengo Social Hall when police officers stopped a group of youths for a random search on suspicion of drug trafficking. Their main target was a well-known suspect within the group.
However, things quickly escalated when the suspect resisted arrest and shouted for help, drawing in a larger crowd that had just left a mosque. The group reportedly attacked the officers, forcing one of them to fire a shot in self-defense. Tragically, a bullet struck the 17-year-old boy in the head, and he later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Wednesday Morning Chaos: Protests Turn Violent
By 6 AM, enraged residents gathered in the streets, blocking major roads and lighting bonfires to demand justice for the slain teenager. The protest quickly escalated, spreading to the nearby Gikomba Market, catching many by surprise.
Angry protesters attacked police cars, setting at least two vehicles ablaze, as police officers struggled to contain the growing unrest. Law enforcement responded with tear gas and live bullets, leading to violent running battles between officers and demonstrators.
Businesses Shut, Property Destroyed
The situation brought business in Majengo, Pumwani, and Gikomba to a standstill. Many shops remained closed as residents feared further clashes. The destruction of property continued as tensions ran high, with police reinforcing security to prevent further escalation.
Commander Sedah condemned the violence, stating that while residents had the right to express their grievances, acts of criminality, including burning police cars and destroying property, would not be tolerated. He also confirmed that one police officer sustained serious injuries in the confrontation, suffering wounds to the hip, hand, and back.
Call for Calm as Investigations Begin
In response to the unrest, police officials held an emergency meeting with local leaders to address the growing tension. Sedah urged calm and cooperation as investigations into the shooting continue. However, with emotions still running high, many residents remain skeptical about whether justice will be served.
The situation remains tense, with authorities closely monitoring the area to prevent further flare-ups.
