Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko is a wealthy man and never shies off from displaying his opulence.
In May 2019, Sonko (sheng name for rich) said he was worth more than the Nairobi county annual budget, which was KSh 32 billion at the time.
Speaking to NTV, the flamboyant politician revealed he acquired his wealth way before he was elected Makadara member of parliament in 2010.
“I’m worth more than the annual budget of Nairobi, and I’ve got some fixed deposit accounts about $ 5 million in different banks. And I put this money even way back before I became an MP from the proceeds which I used to get.

“I always put money where the money is I don’t have to announce where I get my profits from if I buy a property at 10 million after 10 years I can sell that property at a profit because the value of profits appreciates every day,” he said.

The 46-year-old politician said he used to earn KSh 4 million from his Mombasa club weekly.
Matatu empire
Before venturing into politics, Sonko managed his transport business with his wife, Primrose Mbuvi.
He owned over ten 32-seater matatus, which plied route 58 between the capital Nairobi and BuruBuru, a congested centre.
In tandem with the younger generation, some of his matatus were named Brown Sugar, Convict, Ferrari, Lakers and Ruff Cuts.
