First Lady Rachel Ruto has sent an appeal for food donations to starving Kenyans and pledged to dedicate her energy and time to feeding the hungry.
She also asked citizens to use next Wednesday’s prayer day to fast and donate what they will have saved from the skipped meals to those affected by drought.
She was speaking during a church service at St Bernadette Catholic Church in Ngoingwa, Thika.
She was accompanied by Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a and Cabinet Secretary nominees Alice Wahome and Aisha Jumwa, among other leaders.
“Donate the Sh100 or Sh200 you will have saved by fasting to assist the hungry. We shall be serving God by helping the poor and the starving,” she said.
“We have seen in the news children in parts of Kenya dropping out of school as a result of hunger. I will dedicate myself to feeding these children and other starving citizens,” said Mrs Ruto.
Noting that the task ahead of the Kenya Kwanza administration is enormous, she assured the country that with prayer and God’s hand, all shall be well and the economy could soon be back on track.
She termed her husband, President William Ruto, as a workaholic who reports to the office at 5am daily and does not sleep until after midnight.
She said he cannot let down the country.
On his part, Wamatangi said he would implement his manifesto to the letter — which includes food security, job creation, healthcare and infrastructure.
The governor also promised to have major roads in Thika upgraded, besides improving service delivery. These, he said, are the twin gears needed to attain city status.
Ng’ang’a told opposition leader Raila Odinga to give the Ruto administration time to work for Kenyans.
“While it is Raila’s duty, as leader of the opposition, to keep the government on check, let him go slow on his criticism,” the MP said.
