A petrol tanker exploded on Wednesday morning in Sikata area along Webuye- Malaba highway killing a driver on the spot.
According to the eye witness, the accident occurred at around 7:30 am.
The witness said the tanker was heading to Malaba when it hit an electric transformer post and burst into flames.
“We tried to save the driver who was still inside the burning tanker but we could not manage. It so painful because we witnessed him burning to death,” he said.
The witness further blamed the county firefighters for arriving late at the scene, saying had they arrived earlier the driver could have been saved.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck was trying to overtake a matatu that was heading to Kanduyi but lost control causing the accident.
Bungoma county police commander Francis Kooli confirmed that the tanker veered off the road hitting an electric post that led to the explosion but said that nobody inside the matatu was injured.
However, the police boss called on the road users to be keen while using the busy highway.
