Bomet Woman Representative Linet Chepkorir Toto, Saturday, March 4, hosted his fiance Godfrey Kimutai and other clan elders for her dowry negotiations.
The ceremony was conducted according to the Kalenjin Koito culture of marriage.
According to the photos seen, elders drawn from Toto’s side engaged Kimutai’s family in finding the right formula for paying the bride’s price.
After negotiations, the families posed for a photo indicating an agreement between Toto’s and Kimutai’s kin.
Further, the families ate different meals to signify the start of Toto’s and Kimutai’s union.
The Koito culture stipulates that the bride’s family should only prepare ugali made of millet flour mixed with sorghum, cassava and maize.
On the other side, the bridegroom’s family is expected to prepare bull’s meat, sheep, goat and sour milk.
Kimutai proposed to the first-time Woman Representative on Valentine’s Day on Tuesday, February 14.
Toto accepted Kimutai’s proposal, vowing to respect and honour him.
“This has never happened in my life…I was telling my fiancé that I should write a book. I want to congratulate my sweetheart,” Toto stated after the proposal.
According to the culture, the bride price consists of five to seven cattle, one or two sheep and goats, cowrie shells, and money equivalent to the value of one cow.
