The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party primaries, which are set to take place tomorrow, are off to a rocky start after some vote papers were burned on the way to Mt Kenya.

In Embu town, near a popular hotel, a vehicle transporting election materials was plundered on Wednesday, April 13 and the vote boxes and documents were burned.

Earlier, aspirants in Embu spoke to the media, making counter-claims about alleged rigging plans.

Cecily Mbarire, a close friend of Deputy President William Ruto, vowed to leave the party if the election was not free and fair.

Manyatta MP John Muchiri, who is also a close ally of the DP, also urged the party to be honest in its handling of the primaries on Thursday. Muchiri and Mbarire are vying for the same position.

“As a candidate, what I am advocating for is a free and fair nomination and that is the same thing I have told my party. I will not take part in the exercise if it’s not free and fair,” Mbarire stated.

Veronica Maina, the party’s Secretary-General, had previously warned politicians against inciting turmoil during the primaries.

Officials warned of severe repercussions, including the loss of a party ticket.
