William Ruto: No one can steal my votes, not even the deep state

Deputy President William Ruto has maintained the ‘system and deep state’ has no powers to steal his votes on August 9.

Ruto said he was aware of the fears of some of his supporters but noted such forces will not succeed as they have God on their side.

“Have no fear, the system and the deep state will not steal our victory. We already have evidence that they do not have the capacity to do it; they would have done in the Kiambaa by-election. God has already answered that question, it should not bother you,” he said.

Speaking at a prayer breakfast at his Karen residence on Thursday, Ruto said his team has attained victory in by-elections where they had greenhorns running against strong candidates with a big war chest.

“We found another candidate who had run before but then disappeared yet again.  Then, there was this young man who was the briefcase carrier of our original candidate (John Kawanjiku) who told us, let us look for a candidate but in the event there is no one I am available, and I kept looking at him and said no it cannot be this one let us keep looking for one and finally we were left with no one,”the DP said.

With no option left, the DP said they settled on Kawanjiku who at the time only had 10 per cent support according to opinion polls but who ended up winning the election.

Ruto described the opposing candidate as formidable ” with the system and everything needed to win an election”.

Calling on the churches to stand up for their interests in government, the deputy president said politics is about interests and so religious leaders must also step forward to take rightful place.

“Everybody has interests and when the church comes forth to say it wants to sign in its interests in the next government, it is the right thing to do and for the first time in Kenya we will have the interests for the faith on the table,” he added.

Speaking separately in Nyamira county later in the day, Ruto said the country’s fortunes could only be changed by turning around the economy but not amending the laws.

He assured that Kenya Kwanza team will be committed to changing the politics of the country from revolving around government positions to focusing on economy.

“We want to change Kenya, which can only be done by growing and expanding the economy but not amending the constitution,” he said.

“Our competitors are having a difficult time coming to terms with economic discussions we are spearheading. We need to change Kenyan politics.”

He said politicians should be talking about how Kenyans can have more money in their pockets and not positions available in the Executive.

Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetang’ula said the Kenyan economy needs an urgent restructuring.

He accused President Uhuru Kenyatta of gambling with Kenyan lives and putting in place economic policies that have no impact to the common man.

“We as Kenya Kwanza will be focused in uplifting the common man economically,” he said.

ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi accused Uhuru of wanting to influence politics of the country even after his retirement.

“Uhuru had a full loaf of bread during his 10 years in office. Why then team up with Azimio guy and tell him you want half a loaf. Finish your term and go home. Why be chairman of coalition and a party. What else will he want to be chairman of?” he posed.
