A hyena was spotted in Nairobi’s Langata estate on Friday night, causing fear among the estate residents.

The scavenger was reportedly sighted near Deliverance Church and recorded on camera strolling past several gates.

In the 40-seconds clip, the animal makes a stop at several gates, moving from one gate to the next and would occasionally stop to stare in the distance.

Demas Kiprono brought the matter to the attention of Kenya Wildlife Service, posting the video on Twitter.

KS responded, stating: “We took note of this and alerted our team. In case of further wildlife sighting, we request that you call our toll free line, 0800597000 for records and follow up.”

Here is the video of the hyena as shared on Twitter.

Langata estate borders Nairobi National Park that is home to diverse wildlife.

Cases of wild animals straying out of the park are not uncommon with the most common one being lions.

On 30 October 2019, three grown lions were spotted on the outskirts of Rongai town, sparking fear.

The big cats would be returned to the park, to the relief of anxious residents.

KWS Strategic Communication Specialist Paul Udoto confirmed that the lions left the park in the morning but were taken back for the safety of the residents.

Reports indicate that Charles Emedo arrived at the morgue to collect the body of Andear Mwangi in a plot that did not succeed.

The body of the deceased has been the subject of a long-standing court battle, pitting Emedo against his would-be in-laws.

Andear passed on from liver-related complications at the age of 35 more than two months ago.

Prior to her death, the two (Andear and Emedo) lived as husband and wife for nine years and were blessed with two children.

Andear’s family however do not recognize the Nigerian national as the husband to the deceased and want to give the deceased a final send-off.

“There is nobody that is buried by somebody unknown when the parents and relatives are not aware,” Lydia Mwathathi, the deceased’s mother said.

“They have stayed together for some time but they are neither married officially nor customary.

Hakulipa dowry, that was not a marriage, mtu ni kama amekidnap mtoto na amemuweka mahali hawezi jitoa,” she added.

Police as well as the morgue attendants are on high alert and maintain that the body will not be moved until the matter is heard in court and determined.

The two warring parties are scheduled to appear in court on 05 December 2019.

The public was treated to political drama on Friday with Jubilee legislators clashing publicly over the way forward for the much publicized Building Bridges Initiative report in an ugly showdown.

First to find himself on the receiving end was Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria who stated that the report should head to parliament as it is needless to spend billions to take the document back to the public when they had already given their views on the same.

“It was just the other day we spent Sh500 million collecting views on the same initiative. Why would we again want to spend more on a referendum when we can easily get everything done through Parliament where we are the people’s representatives?” Kuria asked.

Process to be left to these political thugs

The comments did not go down well with Kiambu Woman Representative Gathoni wa Muchomba who dismissed Kuria’s proposal, claiming that MPs could not be trusted to undertake the process as they can be compromised and tering them political thugs.

“We cannot allow this process to be left to these political thugs and it should be left to the people who are supreme on matters Constitution,” asserted Wamuchomba.

Her remarks attracted the fury of MPs Gichimu Githinji (Gichugu) and Wangui Ngirichi (Kirinyaga Woman Rep) who came out guns blazing in defense of Kuria.

“By simply expressing our democratic rights to state how we feel the BBI should move, and supporting that it comes through Parliament, does not make us political thugs,” Ms Ngirichi said.

The legislators were speaking at a fundraiser organized by Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho with Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’I in attennance.

The event was marred by chaos after the crowd heckled nominated Senator Maina Kamanda for failing to recognize DP Ruto in his list of leaders.

His remarks that the region is keenly watching CS Matiang’I further angered the crowd.

“We have been observing how CS Matiang’i has been loyal to the president. Today he invited me here and I can say without a doubt that he is a man to watch.

“As the Kikuyu community, we can assure you that we are watching you. We always say that wise people take their time to observe and note things from afar. We are watching your steps,” remarked Kamanda amidst jeers from the crowd.

DP Ruto changes tune, agrees with Raila on fate of BBI report

In other related news, Deputy President William Ruto has welcomed proposal for a referendum for the Building Bridges Initiative report as championed by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

DP Ruto whose camp had earlier on favored tabling the report in parliament made the hasty retreat yesterday (Friday) while addressing the public at a thanksgiving ceremony for nominated MP David Ole Sankok.

He however warned that the referendum would best be done after arriving at a consensus to avoid dividing the country.

“We have read it (report) and there are some parts of it that could be implemented through commissions, policies and if there shall be a referendum, then it would be best we develop a consensus so that the process does not become divisive,” said Dr Ruto.

Born out of wedlock? You might not get inheritance

Homa Bay Township MP Peter Kaluma has proposed to amend the Succession Bill.

The new proposal will lock out partners, former wives and children born out of wedlock from claiming the inheritance.

Kaluma’s proposal wants the inheritance to be limited only to men and women who are legally married, their legal children and extended family.

He wants section three of the Act to be amended to read that a spouse means a husband or wife or wives recognized under the Marriage Act.

Section three defines a wife as a woman who has separated from her husband, a spouse, a widow and also caters for men who are widowers.

Children of a deceased

Notably, it does not limit inheritance to only those who have tied the knot under civil, traditional or religious marriages.

Kaluma also wants to amend section 29 of the Act which defines who a dependant is.

According to Kaluma, the section should read that a dependent is a spouse and the children of a deceased.

A person not named in this section shall not be a dependant for the purposes of this Act unless the person proves was maintained by the deceased for a period of two years prior to the deceased’s death,” the proposal reads.

Dependants are defined as the wife or wives, former wife or wives and the children of the deceased whether or not maintained by the deceased immediately prior to a man’s death.

Pay Ksh20,000 monthly

Itumbi’s reaction comes after a judge directed that he pay Ksh20,000 monthly for a child he fathered before the case is heard and determined.

Itumbi had asked for a DNA test, which came back and ascertained he is the father of the child.

The mother had filed the case claiming Mr Itumbi deserted the child from birth and has refused to provide any form of support.

According to the plaintiff, Itumbi and her were in a relationship between January and August 2018.

EACC Reveals Sonko’s scandalous millions, puts him at the center of mega corruption scandal

Details of Sonko’s questionable dealings and the millions he received

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has unravelled the puzzle of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s millions, revealing how millions of shillings were wired to his personal bank accounts in dealings that are the subject of investigations.

According to EACC, Sonko collaborated with private companies in questionable dealings that saw the county boss pocket Sh39 million through kickbacks, from companies doing business with the county government.

The commission’s forensic investigator, Simon Cherpka claims that Sh27.4 million was wired into Sonko’s accounts at Equity Bank from three companies which had been awarded multi-million-shilling contracts under questionable circumstances by the county government.

Between June 2017 and February 2019, investigations have revealed massive fraud, procurement irregularities, misappropriation of public funds and conflict of interest through inconsistent and exaggerated payments made to individuals and proxy companies at City Hall,” says Mr Cherpka in an affidavit filed in court.

According to the affidavit, the companies were awarded teders and contract unprocedurally and earned millions from doing business with the county government.

Millions of shillings paid to th companies would be wired back to Sonko’s personal accounts and to county officials who were part of the deals.

Embezzlement of funds

According to the investigator, the commission received reports that some Nairobi county officials in collusion with private companies were engaging in fraudulent schemes to embezzle public funds in the award of tenders for provision of goods and services to the county.

Mr Cherpka alleges that in a period of five months between October 2018 and March 2019, Hardi Enterprises Ltd received a total of Sh357 million from the county for purported solid waste collected and disposed.

He says records from the Registrar of Companies showed that directors of Hardi Enterprises Ltd are Anthony Mwaura and Rose Njeri, and further analysis of their accounts showed that they transferred Sh55.8 million to the accounts of Toddy Civil Engineering Company Ltd which they also own.

On December 17, 2018, he claims the commission established that Toddy Civil Engineering Company Ltd transferred Sh3 million to Sonko’s account at Equity Bank, which could have been a kickback from the garbage collection contract.

Mr Cherpka adds that analysis of the governor’s bank statements at Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) revealed that prior to the award of contract for garbage collection he received Sh8.6 million from Mr Mwaura for campaign support and settling of debts.

“It is evident from the payments that Anthony Mwaura and Mike Mbuvi Sonko have a history of association which has extended to fraudulent transactions with the county government,” he said.

According to the investigator, Sonko allegedly received Sh17 million from Amaco Ltd, Sh8.4 million from Yiro Enterprises Ltd and Sh2 million from Web Tribe Ltd at a time the companies were conducting business with the county government.

The case is scheduled for hearing on November 28.
