To 10 Diploma Courses That Are Better Than Degrees In Kenya

0

There is a general perception that degree courses are better than diplomas. But is that always the truth?

When it comes to the education sector, a rise in universities has seen majority of youths opting to acquire a degrees so as to be competitive in the job market.
The honest truth is that there are some diploma courses that are way better than degrees and even pay better.

In 2016, Ernst & Young announced that they would be removing the degree classification from their entry criteria, saying there was “no evidence” success at university correlates with achievement in later life.
So what does this mean to graduates in Kenya looking for employment? Well, according to Kenyan employers, having a degree does not spell out that you will automatically get a job. Even so, some employers will shun out degree holders and opt for those with diplomas and certificates.

That said, here are diploma courses that are way better than degrees yet people don’t even realize.

1. Diploma In Estate Agency And Property Management

This is one of the diploma courses that has the ability to open a floodgate of opportunities.
Currently there is no industry that is booming like real estate and the demand for real estate agents is at an all-time high.
And this means that without a doubt, you will easily land a job in real estate with your diploma.

2. Diploma in Purchasing and Supplies

I still maintain that if you are looking for a marketable diploma course in Kenya, Purchasing and Supplies is a good choice.
It is one of the fastest growing professions thus making it to the top marketable diploma courses in Kenya that is way better than a degree.

3. Diploma in Human Resource Management

HR professionals are some of the key decision makers in the organization and companies cannot do without them.
Because of this demand, diploma graduates are in high demand as compared to their degree counterparts in this course.

4. Diploma in Quantity Surveying

This is one of the diploma courses that you can pursue with a grade of less than a C+. Technical University of Kenya is best known for producing high caliber graduates in quantity surveying.
The beauty of this course is that, you get a job immediately and no matter how bad things may seem, you can never lack something to do.

5. Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology

A diploma in this course gets you a chance to work at the likes of GlaxoSmithKline, one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in Kenya. Here you can earn as much as 100K a month.

If you have the resources to open your own chemist which is what most people prefer, you can be looking to make 10K in a day depending on the location. That’s more that 100K in a month and way better than someone who spends 8 hours in the office.

6. Diploma in Architecture

Contrary to the perception most Kenyans have about this course, it is still one of the best diploma courses in Kenya.
The course is not saturated and there is still a high demand for architects in this country.
With a starting salary of 50K, you will find that in the long run, you are likely to be making more money than your degree counterparts.

7. Diploma in Journalism & Mass Communication

A majority of Kenyans believe that this course is flooded but who said that there is no demand for journalists?
This is one of the courses that is best suited for the most talented individuals.
With a diploma and a starting salary of 40K depending on the media house, this salary is likely to increase throughout the years.

8. Diploma in Web & Graphic design

Most people in this field are self-employed and are outsourced by companies.
With the advent of technology, more and more businesses are being conducted online hence the demand for web and graphic designers.
The two courses can be done at the same time and are among the best paying diploma courses in Kenya today.

9. Diploma in Project Management/ Monitoring & Evaluation

If you have always wanted to work for an NGO, a diploma in project management or monitoring and evaluation will get you there.
In an NGO, you can be guaranteed a salary of more than 70K in a month with flexible working hours.

10. Diploma in Accounting and Finance

The corporate world is always in need of accountants and financial experts. It is no wonder that these courses are the most sought after diploma courses in Kenya.
Colleges like the Kenya Institute of Management offer excellent diploma courses in Accounting and Finance.

The Real Reasons Kenyan Employers Prefer Diploma Holders

1. Diploma holders are hardworking compared to degree holders

Diploma holders know that this is a competitive job market filled with degree, masters and PHD holders.
For this reason, they tend to work harder and become better every day.

2. Diploma holders are not choosy

While it’s a tendency for most degree holders to have wild and unrealistic expectations, diploma holders are not choosy when it comes to jobs.
In truth, degree holders will only dream of working for multinationals like the UN, Safaricom, big banks etc.
Diploma holders on the other hand focus on building their skills and gaining relevant experience.

3. Diploma holders don’t change jobs too often

Unlike their degree counterparts, diploma holders are loyal to the company they work for.
Graduates move too quickly from company to company in search of “greener pastures” making it impossible for them to be hired.

In conclusion

As you can see, pursuing a diploma does not make you less of a human. In some instances, this could actually work for you rather than against you. While there is a tendency to think that degree holders have better luck at jobs, look around you. This should not discourage you from pursuing a degree though, it should be an encouragement to those who are yet to decide what they want pursue.

You are a small boy – Miguna’s lawyers tells Attorney General’s representative in court

He has Zero chills!

Photo of veteran human rights lawyer, Dr John Khaminwa

There was a heated exchange at the High Court in Nairobi after Attorney General Kihara Kariuki failed to show up in court in a case where he had been summoned to explain the Government’s reluctance to observe court orders requiring the unconditional return of lawyer Miguna Miguna.

Miguna’s lawyers did not mince their words in expressing their displeasure against AG Kihara and the entire government which has defied more than thirteen court orders on the return of their client.

The exiled NRM activist was represented by veteran lawyers, Dr John Khaminwa and Harun Ndubi who made minded meat of the junior lawyer Kihara had sent to represent him.

State counsel Christopher Marwa had a hard time getting audience before Justice John Mativo who presided over the case.

We have a real problem in this country. The entire world is watching as Kenya blatantly refuses to obey court orders. We need a mature lawyer to shed light on this matter. If the AG cannot come here in his personal capacity, let the Solicitor General appear,” Khaminwa said.

When Marwa attempted to interject, a visibly upset Khaminwa rose to dismiss the junior lawyer.

“With tremendous respect to the young learned friend, the way he is addressing the court, he is not doing it as the Attorney General of Kenya. We need the AG to come and address this court (Marwa attempts to interject but Justice Mativo notes that his speech is not going on record). My Lord I ‘m glad you are not writing what he is saying, it is not worth writing at all,” the Senior lawyer lamented.

My learned senior colleague may not have the benefit of going through this provision of the constitution..” Marwa attempted a come back.

With respect, we object to this insult, we have practiced constitutional law longer than this boy. He cant tell us that we do not know constitutional law,” Ndubi hit back.

With due respect, the state counsel is illiterate on constitutional law…this is a serious matter, it is not a battle of wits on who knows more or who can quote legal technicalities. It is a serious problem of disobedience of court orders,” Dr Khaminwa added.

Marwa did not attempt to correct his senior colleagues.

Justice Mativo ruled that AG Kihara should personally respond to the court through a legal opinion explaining the Government of Kenya’s disobedience of court orders.

Striking Egerton students engage police in running battles

Egerton University students engaged police in running battles as they protested Sh16,862 damage fee imposed on seven of their student leaders.

The fine was imposed on the seven by the University’s Senate after they were accused of inciting students to strike on Decemeber 4, 2019.

The seven student leaders have further been barred from sitting for the end of semester exams scheduled to start within the month, in addition to being suspended indefinitely.

“The registrar’s office is a very important organ at the university. Its orders must be respected.

“The student leaders will be kept away from our campuses until such a time when the senate will lift the ban,” stated the University’s vice-chancellor, Prof. Rose Mwonya.

The students vowed not to pay a damage fee of Ksh 16,862 imposed by the institution following riots witnessed at the university late last year.

The school had also issued a circular compelling the students to not only pay the damage fee but also clear the school fees before any readmission was done.

1st and 4th year students who had been scheduled to report on 1st January camped outside the institution.

Tanasha Donna shares her frustrations being Diamond’s girlfriend

Kenyan radio host and singer Tanasha Donna Oketch has opened up on the frustrations she has been going through as WCB boss Diamond Platnumz’s girlfriend.

In a series of videos she shared on Instagram, Tanasha said she has been undergoing a lot of pressure because she is transitioning and many things are going on in her life.

The mother of one mentioned that 2019 was a challenging year for her because it came with a lot of negativity, judgement and hate from people who did not like the idea of her being Diamond’s girlfriend.

Tanasha Donna shares her frustrations being Diamond’s girlfriend

She went on to say that people did not like the fact that she is a private person and does not do things for clout, like those before her.

I’m at a stage in life where by I am transitioning and I’m transitioning really fast and so many things are happening simultaneously. There’s so much pressure I’m undergoing at the moment. You know 2019 was a good year for me but a very tough year. A lot of negativity, a lot of judgement, a lot of hate coz I happen to date this public figure who’s out there and you know when something is new to people and people are used to something for so long, and they see something new and they are not used to it, they tend to judge a lot and they are highly opinionated in your life, in your business. People are not used to the fact that I’m a private person. I’m a public figure who enjoys her personal privacy and her personal life. I’d rather have my craft and my talent be the clout, be the kiki like they call it but my personal life, my family, my mother, my cousins, my son, my personal business is my personal business. People were not used to that, people were used to trending for the wrong or right reasons, people were used to constant clout, constant controversy and the fact that I was not about that made people not like me,” said Tanasha.

The Nah Easy singer further disclosed that she suffered and had to deal with all that and even when she decided to avoid all the negativity. Some people threw it straight to her face.

Tanasha Donna stated that despite all that, she focused on her work which according to her will prove wrong all those who made her life difficult.

Constant judgement like oh how can you date such a girl she’s too simple, she’s too this or that. I went through a really difficult period having to endure and deal with all of that and even when I decided to close myself from all that negativity it somehow ended up being shoved right in my face and it got to a point I said you know what, I’m gonna focus and prove this muther*****rs wrong. Let me show them what I’m capable of, let me work on my projects, let me work on my EP let my projects be the clout,” she said.

She also noted that she will never do things for cheap publicity, but her work will speak for itself.

Drama ensued after Deputy President William Ruto was reportedly locked out of his official residence with his property packed and taken out of the palatial residence.

Sunday Nation reports that the DP and his handlers had arrived in Mombasa on Wednesday and dropped off his personal effects at his newly refurbished official residence that was formerly Coast Provincial Commissioner’s residence before attending to other matters.

DP Ruto was set to spend the night at the residence but was treated to a rude shock when his personal effects that had been lodged at the facility were hurriedly packed.

Report indicate that government employees at the residence had received instructions to remove Ruto’s personal effects from the house, a move which surprised DP Ruto’s team.

The DP was forced to look for alternative accommodation, settling for English Point Marina where he spent the night before returning to Nairobi the next day.

File image of DP Ruto at an event

A source privy to the detail confirmed that “His clothes and other belongings had already been put in various rooms. It is essentially a home, and therefore his personal effects were in place that morning. Around 4 PM, a call came from a senior government official to government employees there that all DP’s personal effects should be removed. It was a shocker”.

When contacted to clarify what happened, DP Ruto’s communications boss, Emmanuel Talam was equally at a loss to explain the events of the day alleging politics.

DP Ruto has been wooing politicians and opinion shapers from the Coast region, making inroads and securing the support of among others, Aisha Jumwa.

The DP camped in the region this week, holding a meeting with Jubilee leaders from Taita-Taveta at his Mata farm in Taveta on Thursday in efforts to win over the region that is perceived to be an opposition stronghold, ahead of the next general election.

Those in attendance included Taveta MP Naomi Shaban, Former Woman Representative Joyce Lay and Woman Representative Lydia Haika who led more than 200 delegates who pledged to support Dr Ruto’s journey to State House in 2022.

Shock in Kiambu as Mugumo tree grows on church rooftop

A church service in Gituamba village, Lari, Kiambu County, came to a halt after members noticed a Mugumo tree growing on the roof of the church building.

The incident at Africa Independent Church of Kenya saw curious onlookers flock the church’s premises, while others scattered.

The church’s lead pastor, Zachary Ndugire, said he was shocked by the tree.

“I could not believe it when I heard that there was a Mugumo tree that has grown on the roof. I am sure God is sending us a message. I will start praying and fasting to get the real revelation. It has never happened and it is shocking”, said the pastor of the church that was established in 1998.

Some of the church members said they have now become prayer warriors since they fear the tree could signal a calamity might befall them soon. Daniel Ng’ang’a Waithaka, a Kikuyu elder, said that the tree will not be cut down because it was “planted by God.”

“This tree was planted by God and no one should dare touch it because the tree and the church belong to God. We will conduct a ceremony to bless this tree and are urging the church leadership not to cut down this tree because we don’t want a curse to befall us. When we received the news, we hurriedly went to the church to conduct an inspection and it was confirmed that it was indeed a Mugumo tree. This is a symbol of blessings and we should be careful not to trigger a curse.

He added that: “In our tradition, women are not allowed to go near a Mugumo tree, but in this case, they should not be afraid because this is a house of God. All is well and we are waiting for God to give us direction”.

Some of the Kikuyu elders inspect a fig tree

In the last two weeks, two Mugumo trees have fallen in Nyeri County, causing concern and Peter Kamuri, the pastor in charge at AIPCK Gituamba church, said the ‘sacred tree’ has done wonders because the sick have been healed since the tree was discovered.

“People in this area and nearby towns no longer go to the hospital because there is a healing power here. We have seen the hand of God and miracles are happening. The tree growing on the roof is not something that we are afraid of because all that we see are blessings. God had a good reason planting it on the roof. I have told the church members not to be afraid and wait for God’s voice. We pray to God to show us what this means.

“We are sure that one day God will reveal to us the reason for the growth of this sacred tree adjacent to the cross. God is powerful, so don’t be surprised if the tree continues growing without destroying the church. We are privileged to witness this miracle because nowhere in the world have we heard of this before”, he added.

Sarah Muthoni, a church member, said that, “When I saw the tree, I was really afraid, but our pastor and elders have encouraged us not to be scared because, through the tree, God is working miracles. We hope that nothing bad will come out this”.
