Larry Madowo Explains Why He Is Not Covering Tanzania’s Protests

CNN International Correspondent Larry Madowo has announced that he will not be covering Tanzania’s general elections, citing restrictions placed on foreign and independent journalists in the country.

In a video shared on Thursday, October 30, 2025, Madowo explained that Tanzania requires foreign journalists to secure government approval before reporting within its borders.

He noted, however, that such permits are seldom issued to international media correspondents.

“Why am I not covering the elections in Tanzania? It’s a simple reason — Tanzania does not like independent, critical reporting,” Madowo stated in the video.

The journalist added that the country’s media accreditation process poses challenges for foreign correspondents.

“To operate in the country as a foreigner, I need media accreditation — essentially permission from the government — and historically, Tanzania does not issue these permits,” he said.

Madowo further claimed that the situation has remained largely unchanged since the tenure of the late President John Magufuli and has not significantly improved.

He noted that while Kenyan citizens can travel to Tanzania without a visa, they are still required to obtain accreditation to report legally.

“Could I go as a tourist because I don’t need a visa as a Kenyan? Yes. But I am not allowed to report in that status — that would violate the law,” Madowo said, adding that doing so could result in legal consequences such as arrest or deportation.

He also expressed concern for local journalists, saying that many face challenges when covering politically sensitive issues.

“Even Tanzanian journalists find it hard to operate. They are harassed, they are intimidated,” he said, without naming specific cases.

Madowo added that several of his international colleagues have also struggled to obtain media accreditation.

“I know many foreign reporters who applied for accreditation, but they were rejected or did not receive a response,” he said.

His remarks come amid reports of a tense electoral environment in Tanzania, with some international observers noting restrictions on press freedom and access to information.

Larry Madowo is among Kenya’s most prominent international journalists, recognised for his coverage of major political events.

He previously reported on Kenya’s 2022 General Election for CNN and has covered political and social developments across Africa, focusing on democracy, governance, and media freedom.

“Nilimpiga Makofi” – Akothee Opens Up on Beating Ex-Husband During Their Marriage

Akothee Opens Up on Beating Ex-Husband During Their Marriage

Kenyan singer and businesswoman Esther Akoth, popularly known as Akothee, has sparked an online conversation after sharing a candid narration about her past relationship, urging couples to normalize discussing mental health before getting married.

The outspoken artist said she decided to share her story — though humorous — to help people learn from her experience and avoid falling into dangerous relationships masked as love.

“There’s a reason I shared this story. It’s funny, but let’s laugh and learn from it. Just as we normalize HIV testing before marriage, we should also normalize disclosing other hidden illnesses that aren’t detected in the blood,” Akothee said.

“Not Every Illness Shows in the Blood”

Akothee emphasized the importance of mental health awareness in relationships, saying that many people are walking around “unwell without even knowing it.”

She encouraged couples to be open about their psychological struggles and emotional wellbeing before committing to marriage, warning that ignoring red flags can lead to devastating outcomes.

“Every couple should be honest about the issues they carry in their heads. The moment you start asking yourself why someone is acting a certain way, don’t ignore it. If you let that slide, it could cost you dearly — we might end up seeing you six feet under,” she warned.

“People Are Living with Madness in Disguise”

Akothee narrated her experience with her ex, Omosh Boxer, describing it as both shocking and educational.

She humorously said that some people enter relationships while concealing deep psychological problems, making it hard for their partners to notice the signs early on.

“Meeting Omosh Boxer shocked me, but also educated me a lot. People are living with mad people dressed up nicely. There are some moves a person will make and I will immediately figure him out,” she said.

Akothee went on to caution that such relationships often appear perfect in the beginning, with “all lights green,” until reality sets in and chaos begins.

“This kind of person comes with a lot of packaged love that is unique. No time to see red flags — all is green, until the day police forget to regulate the traffic lights. It’s all chaos,” she joked.

“You want to stay in kenya ,you love kenya and us we want to go to Europe we love Europe, na vile huwa tukiwa Europe tunacheza mchezo wa paka na panya na Polisi hata kama hauna makosa, halafu wewe ,wampiga msichana wa mwenyewe karibu kufa, na kurusha vita vya kamasi? Kisa wewe mgonjwa akili? Wewe uliponea , muulize Omosh siku aliiitisha mahindi ya wenyewe ikaletwa kwangu na akaruka kulipa., wewe zile makofi alikula, na investment zake za takataka. Yaaaani mimi super star kajisahau, kwa akina ndoa nikaanza kufuga nguruwe nikasahau studio, kisa mapenzi , kumbe wazimu. Aaah I have embarrassed myself enough.”

“I Embarrassed Myself Enough”

Reflecting on her past, Akothee admitted that love once blinded her to the point of losing focus on her career and priorities.

“I, a superstar, forgot myself — I got into marriage and even started keeping pigs, forgetting the studio because of love. I have embarrassed myself enough,” she confessed.

The mother of five said she has since learned valuable lessons about relationships and self-awareness, stressing that mental health conversations should be as normal as physical health tests before marriage.

Fans React

Akothee’s honest post has drawn mixed reactions online, with many fans praising her for her vulnerability and humor, while others noted that her message carries a serious reminder about mental wellness and toxic relationships.

Her post adds to the growing public discourse in Kenya around mental health awareness, particularly in romantic relationships and marriages.

Jubilee Party Appoints Fred Matiang’i as Deputy Party Leader, Endorses Him for 2027 Presidential Race

The Jubilee Party has officially appointed former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i as its Deputy Party Leader, marking a major step in his anticipated return to active politics.

During a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on October 30, the party leadership also unanimously endorsed Matiang’i as Jubilee’s presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The move confirms months of speculation about Matiang’i’s growing influence within the party. It also solidifies earlier statements by Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, who had in previous interviews hinted that the party was positioning the former powerful minister for a presidential bid.

According to party insiders, Matiang’i’s appointment is part of a wider strategy to revitalize the party and reclaim its former political dominance ahead of 2027.

“The NEC has resolved to appoint Dr. Fred Matiang’i as the Deputy Party Leader of Jubilee. The party further endorses him as our preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 elections,” read a statement released after the meeting.

A New Chapter for Matiang’i

Dr. Matiang’i, who served in various capacities under former President Uhuru Kenyatta — including Education and Interior ministries — has largely maintained a low profile since leaving government in 2022.

His appointment marks his official comeback to the political arena, with Jubilee Party insiders viewing him as a strong candidate capable of reviving the party’s grassroots networks and national presence.

The former CS, known for his firm leadership and no-nonsense approach to governance, is expected to lead Jubilee’s rebranding efforts and position it as a viable alternative in Kenya’s fast-evolving political landscape.

Building Momentum Toward 2027

Jubilee, which was once the ruling party under Uhuru Kenyatta, has faced internal wrangles and declining support since the 2022 elections. However, the endorsement of Matiang’i signals a renewed sense of unity and direction within the party.

Party officials say the next step will involve mobilizing support across the country, revamping county structures, and rebuilding trust among members and former supporters.

As the 2027 race begins to take shape, Matiang’i’s entry could reshape political alliances and intensify competition within Kenya’s opposition bloc.

“Please Forgive Me” – Bahati Apologizes to Fans For Being a ‘Reckless Father’

0

Kenyan singer Kevin Kioko, better known as Bahati, has taken a moment of reflection as he celebrates 10 years in the music industry.

Once hailed as one of Kenya’s most promising gospel stars, Bahati’s journey has been one of transformation, controversy, and redemption.

As he looks back on a decade filled with both triumphs and turbulence, the Adhiambo hitmaker has opened up about his struggles, growth, and faith — culminating in a public apology to his fans and to God.

Bahati’s career began in the gospel scene, where he rose to fame with soulful tracks like Mama and Barua. However, his eventual crossover to secular music sparked widespread debate among fans who had admired his spiritual beginnings.

Over the years, Bahati became one of Kenya’s most talked-about entertainers, known for his hit songs, bold fashion choices, and attention-grabbing social media moments — from clout-chasing stunts to cross-dressing videos and explicit lyrics.

Despite the criticism, his influence in Kenya’s music industry remains undeniable.

After a year-long break from the spotlight, Bahati made a comeback with a new song titled Seti, which immediately drew backlash from sections of the public accusing him of promoting immorality.

Responding to the criticism, Bahati shared a lengthy emotional message reflecting on his journey and expressing gratitude to his fans.

“I have received many calls, messages from close friends, fans, pastors, and even strangers since I made my musical comeback with Seti. And I did not want to reply to anyone based on emotions because I respect you all,” Bahati said.

“I am marking 10 years in the music scene, and I want to start by saying thank you for your support. It has kept me on top for all those years.”

Bahati Reflects on His Journey

The Adhiambo hitmaker recalled his humble beginnings and the hardships of growing up without parents.

“I turned 18 without parents and never had a father figure. I have tried to be a role model to my children and my family,” he shared.

He admitted that living under public scrutiny has not been easy and acknowledged making mistakes that may have disappointed those who once looked up to him.

“As a young person, I agree that I have made a lot of mistakes along the way. I have lost the way several times, and I have let down people who look up to me. To some point, I have lost your trust. And I understand. But I believe I have done my best as a young man who has grown in the public eye, subject to criticism,” he added.

Bahati’s Heartfelt Apology to Fans and God

In his emotional statement, Bahati apologised to his fans, family, and God, admitting that he has fallen short at times.

“I apologise for all the times you feel like I do not act as a responsible father to my kids and those who follow me. I apologise for all the times you feel like I let Christianity down. But most importantly, to my father in heaven, the one who knows my heart, forgive me of my sins. I’m just a man. I have never left you, God,” he said.

Bahati also prayed for a public sign from God to silence his critics and affirm that he still maintains a strong relationship with Him.

The singer concluded with an emotional video in tears, expressing gratitude to God for His mercy and hinting at a fresh start — one built on faith, growth, and humility.

As he marks a decade in the music scene, Bahati seems ready to redefine his path and restore his connection with both his fans and his faith.

Court Nullifies Police Recruitment, Rules NPSC Has No Mandate to Hire Officers

Court Nullifies Police Recruitment, Rules NPSC Has No Mandate to Hire Officers

The Employment and Labour Relations Court has nullified the planned nationwide police recruitment, ruling that the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) lacks the legal authority to conduct or preside over the exercise.

Delivering her judgment on Thursday, Justice Hellen Wasilwa stated that the recruitment, training, and delegation of duties to police officers fall squarely under the mandate of the National Police Service (NPS), led by the Inspector General of Police.

“The recruitment by the national security organs under Article 232 of the Constitution can only be done by the national security organ itself and not by any other entity outside it,” Justice Wasilwa ruled.

NPSC Overstepped Its Mandate

The court found that the Commission’s involvement in the recruitment process contravened Article 232 of the Constitution, which outlines the principles of public service, including clear delineation of roles and accountability mechanisms within security organs.

Justice Wasilwa emphasised that the NPSC’s role is limited to oversight and administrative functions, not operational ones such as recruitment or dismissal of officers.

“The role of recruiting and dismissing police officers is exclusively that of the Inspector General of Police. Any overreach into this function would interfere with the IG’s independence,” she said.

The ruling effectively nullifies the recently advertised national recruitment drive, terming it “null and void.”

Implications for Police Service Operations

The decision draws a clear constitutional boundary between the NPS and NPSC, which have previously clashed over control of critical human resource functions, including promotions, transfers, and disciplinary procedures.

By reaffirming that internal security and personnel management rest with the NPS, the court underscored the operational independence of the Inspector General as envisioned under the Constitution.

Justice Wasilwa further clarified that the Commission does not play a role in the country’s internal security management and therefore has no authority to preside over police recruitment.

The ruling means that any future police recruitment will have to be organised and executed by the National Police Service, through the office of the Inspector General, in line with the law.

It remains unclear whether the NPSC will appeal the decision, which significantly reshapes the framework of police administration and oversight in Kenya.

Mrima Hill: Kenya’s New Front in the Global Race for Rare Earth Minerals

0

Mrima Hill in Kenya’s Kwale County has become a global hotspot for rare earth minerals, attracting U.S., Chinese, and Australian interest worth $62 billion.

Mrima Hill, located on Kenya’s southern coast in Kwale County, has emerged as a focal point in the global race for rare earth minerals—critical resources powering electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, and advanced electronics.

The site is believed to contain one of Africa’s richest deposits of rare earth elements, positioning Kenya as a potential key player in the world’s clean energy and technology supply chains.

U.S. Focus Shifts Toward Africa’s Mineral Wealth

Reports suggest that the United States has renewed its focus on Africa’s strategic mineral reserves. Under the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump, Washington’s policy toward Africa began pivoting away from traditional trade programs like the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and toward more transactional relationships centered on access to natural resources.

“Clearly, Trump is not interested in the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). The old regime is now extinct…the new regime is more transactional and heavily skewed towards access to minerals and commodities,” said one analyst.

The trend continues under the current administration, with U.S. Vice President JD Vance reportedly planning a visit to Kenya to strengthen cooperation around mineral exploration and supply chain diversification.

“The real issue and challenge around rare earths is the processing — and the U.S. is significantly behind in this respect. Creating that capacity is a slow process. The U.S. sees rare earths as an existential battle with China and is scouring the world to secure supplies,” the expert added.

Kenya’s sacred Mrima Hill turns into a real-world ‘Avatar’: The hidden $62 billion mineral war drawing in the US and China | World News – The Times of India

$62 Billion in Rare Earth Minerals at Mrima Hill

According to Cortec Mining Kenya, a UK and Canadian subsidiary of Pacific Wildcat, the 157-hectare forest at Mrima Hill holds mineral deposits valued at approximately US$62 billion (KSh 8 trillion).

The area’s mineral wealth includes niobium, a key ingredient in steelmaking, aeronautical engineering, and clean-tech manufacturing. These minerals are vital for producing high-performance alloys and technologies used in electric cars and renewable energy infrastructure.

Geopolitical Interest and Security Tensions

As global powers race to secure access to critical minerals, Mrima Hill has attracted growing diplomatic and commercial attention.

In June 2025, Marc Dillard, the former U.S. deputy chief of mission and chargé d’affaires, visited the site as part of Washington’s broader effort to ensure long-term access to Africa’s mineral resources.

Meanwhile, reports from the South China Morning Post indicate rising tension at the site, with Chinese nationals allegedly being turned away by local guards in recent months.

“People come here with big cars, but we turn them away,” said Juma Koja, a local security officer.

Australia Joins the Competition

Adding to the mix, an Australian mining consortium — comprising RareX and Iluka Resources — has announced new prospecting plans for Mrima Hill’s deposits. The move highlights growing international competition for Kenya’s mineral potential as countries seek to secure stable sources of rare earth elements for their industries.

Balancing Opportunity and Sustainability

Kenya now faces a crucial moment: how to harness the economic potential of its rare earth resources while ensuring sustainable development and environmental protection. With an estimated $62 billion in minerals buried beneath Mrima Hill, the stakes are high — not just for Kenya’s economy, but for the global balance of mineral supply and technological progress.

As the global scramble for rare earth minerals intensifies, Mrima Hill could soon become a defining battleground in the race for clean energy dominance and strategic resource security.

Kalonzo, Gachagua Condemns Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s Remarks, Rejects His Apology

The United Opposition of Kenya has strongly condemned remarks made by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga regarding the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing them as “the very definition of hate speech” and rejecting his subsequent apology.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the coalition said Kahiga’s comments, which were broadcast across various media platforms on October 21, 2025, were deeply offensive and divisive.

“Our attention has been drawn to what quite frankly is the very definition of hate speech as clearly defined and outlined in our Constitution, 2010, Article 33 to be precise,” the statement read.

The coalition clarified that Governor Kahiga’s remarks were made in his personal capacity and did not represent the views of any political group affiliated with the United Opposition.

“For the record, Governor Kahiga was elected on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party ticket. He is not a member of the United Opposition or any party under our umbrella,” the statement added.

The coalition called on President William Ruto, as the UDA Party Leader, to condemn the governor’s comments and take disciplinary action. They also urged Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, the UDA Party Chairperson, and Secretary General Senator Hassan Omar to issue a formal censure and public apology on behalf of the party.

“Governor Kahiga’s despicable sentiments should, in one accord, be wholly condemned by all Kenyans starting with his UDA Party leadership,” the statement emphasized.

Additionally, the United Opposition urged the Council of Governors (CoG) to act swiftly and sanction Kahiga for what they described as “stage-managed comments designed to ignite an ethnic war.”

Governor Kahiga’s remarks have sparked nationwide outrage, leading to his resignation as Vice Chairperson of the Council of Governors and a public apology to the Odinga family and the nation.

However, despite his apology, calls for accountability continue to mount, with political leaders and civil society groups urging the government to take firm action against hate speech and divisive rhetoric in the wake of Raila Odinga’s death.

Ezekiel Mutua Urges Calm After Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s Apology and Resignation

Former Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) Chief Executive Officer Dr. Ezekiel Mutua has called for calm and closure following Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s resignation as Vice Chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG).

Dr. Mutua, in a statement on Wednesday, urged Kenyans not to “overdramatize” the controversy, noting that Kahiga had already taken responsibility and issued a public apology over his remarks.

“Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has apologized and resigned as Vice Chair of the Council of Governors. There is no need to overdramatize this regrettable incident. Let it be put to rest,” said Dr. Mutua.

He further emphasized that Kahiga’s statements were personal and should not be used to malign the Kikuyu community or other leaders.

“Importantly, he has stated that the remarks were his personal views, so no one should involve the Kikuyu community or other leaders in this issue. Let Baba’s spirit rest,” Dr. Mutua added.

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga Resigns as CoG Vice Chair, Apologizes Over Raila Remarks

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga tendered his resignation from the Council of Governors’ leadership following widespread public outrage over remarks he allegedly made celebrating the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Kahiga’s resignation came just hours before the CoG was set to convene a special meeting to deliberate on the controversy surrounding his comments.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the governor issued a heartfelt public apology, expressing remorse to the Odinga family and the nation at large for his words.

“I want to sincerely apologise to our mourning nation — to the family of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Mama Ida, her children Rosemary, Junior, and Winnie, Senator Oburu Oginga, Ruth Odinga, other siblings, the larger extended family, the ODM fraternity, the Luo nation, and Kenyans at large,” he said.

Kahiga acknowledged that his comments were inappropriate and deeply hurtful, saying they did not reflect his true feelings about the loss of a national leader.

His resignation followed mounting pressure from political leaders, civil society groups, and members of the public who had called for his removal from the CoG leadership over what they described as “insensitive and divisive” remarks.

Raila Odinga, Kenya’s long-serving opposition leader and former Prime Minister, passed away on October 15, 2025, while receiving medical treatment in Kerala, India. His death has prompted a week of national mourning, with tributes pouring in from across the political divide.

Kahiga’s exit marks the latest political fallout stemming from reactions to Odinga’s passing — an event that has stirred deep emotions across the country.

Dr. Mutua’s statement adds to the growing calls for restraint and unity, as leaders and citizens alike continue to reflect on Odinga’s legacy and the need for respect in public discourse.
