The Kenya Prisons Service (KPS) has officially announced a nationwide recruitment drive for prison constables, both male and female, scheduled to take place on April 30, 2025, across designated recruitment centres.
In a public notice issued by Commissioner General of Prisons Patrick Aranduh, KPS is calling upon qualified and disciplined individuals to join the service, emphasizing that the exercise will be absolutely free of charge and strictly based on merit.
Minimum Qualifications
To qualify, candidates must:
- Be Kenyan citizens
- Possess a valid National Identity Card
- Have no criminal record
- Hold a minimum grade of D+ (plus) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE)
- Be aged between 18 and 28 years
- Be physically and mentally fit
- Have good hearing and clear vision
- Men must be at least 5 feet 4 inches tall, while women must be 5 feet 2 inches or taller.
- Additionally, female candidates must not be pregnant at the time of recruitment or during the initial training period.
Training and Responsibilities
Successful candidates will undergo para-military initial training for no less than nine months. Upon graduation, constables will be tasked with a range of duties including:
- Custody and supervision of inmates
- Ensuring security and order in prison facilities
- Escorting inmates to courts, hospitals, or other institutions
- Assisting in rehabilitation programs such as education, vocational training, and religious services
- Promoting discipline and good behavior among inmates
- Reporting on inmate behavior, incidents, and daily activities
- Supporting logistics including food distribution, hygiene, and medical services
- Assisting in community reintegration programs
Required Documents
On the recruitment day, candidates must present the following original documents:
- National Identity Card
- Birth Certificate
- Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) PIN Certificate
- KCSE Academic Certificate
- Any other relevant testimonials
Strict Warning Against Corruption
Aranduh warned against any attempts to compromise the integrity of the process.
“Bribery and other acts of corruption are unlawful. Any person presenting fake documents or engaging in corrupt activities will be disqualified and prosecuted,” he stressed.
He reiterated that recruitment will only take place at the listed recruitment centers on the designated date. A list of these centers will be made available to the public in due course through official government platforms.
