Celebrated Kenyan rapper Khaligraph Jones has spoken out about the difficulties he faced as a child.
In an interview with Buzz Central, the rapper discussed his latest album, invisible currency, which contains 17 songs, the majority of which are inspired by his childhood in Kayole.
In his song Maombi ya mama, he raps about how hard life was and how they went without rent and were turned down by relatives. He also raps about his late father’s illness and how he dropped out of school after finishing his KCPE.
In the interview, he described how, three years later, he decided to return to school and got a D+ on his KCSE.
“It was not a must for me to go back to school, but I felt I had to do it. I am the fourth born in a family of six, and I am the first to finish high school and had to break that generational curse.” He said.
According to the rapper, he opened up about his life and education to help people understand he hasn’t always had it easy in life.
“Sometimes people see me on TV and think I had a good life since the beginning, but that is not true. We went through some things at some point in our lives and were on the verge of breaking down”. He said.
Khaligraph added that putting God first, his mother’s prayers and believing in himself has helped him conquer life’s hardships.
