Radio Jambo presenter and musician Gidi Ogidi has come under fire after losing 10,000 YouTube subscribers following his performance during Kenya’s Jamhuri Day celebrations.
The event, held to commemorate the country’s independence, saw Gidi perform his classic hit “Maji Maji” alongside other renowned artists.
The high-profile occasion was graced by President William Ruto, First Lady Rachael Ruto, and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who were seen enjoying the performances.
The event’s lineup included celebrated musicians Mejja, Jua Cali, Madtraxx, and members of the Grandpa Family.
Public Reaction to Gidi’s Performance
Despite the star-studded roster, Gidi’s performance drew mixed reactions online.
Many Kenyans criticized him and the other artists for accepting the government’s invitation to perform, interpreting it as an endorsement of the Ruto administration.
The government has faced public outrage over rising living costs, allegations of corruption, and unfulfilled promises, making the artists’ participation a controversial topic.
Shortly after the performance, Gidi’s YouTube subscriber count plummeted from 72,000 to 61,000. The backlash extended to threats of boycotting his popular Radio Jambo show, Patanisho, which he co-hosts with Ghost Mulee.
Gidi’s Controversial Response
Adding to the controversy, Gidi responded to criticism from social media user Francis Gaitho, who accused him of supporting a government seen by some as oppressive.
In a heated reply, Gidi referenced historical atrocities, including the late Michuki regime’s crackdown on the Kikuyu community:
“When Michuki was killing young Kikuyus in the name of Mungiki, Francis Gaitho was not there to defend his kinsmen. Now that I have performed for fellow Kenyans, he’s calling it ATROCITIES,” Gidi wrote.
Outrage Over Divisive Remarks
Gidi’s remarks were met with further condemnation, with many calling them unprofessional and divisive. Critics argued that his statement detracted from the core issue, escalating tensions instead of addressing the concerns raised.
A Performance Turned Controversy
While the Jamhuri Day celebrations aimed to bring Kenyans together, the backlash surrounding Gidi Ogidi’s performance highlights the polarizing nature of political affiliations and public perceptions.
The incident has opened up broader discussions on the role of artists in political events and their impact on public trust.
As the debate continues, Gidi’s next steps—both on and off the air—will be closely watched.
