MP Didmus Barasa narrates how he escaped parliament building during recalls protesters’ raid

For the first time, Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has described his narrow escape from Parliament following a group of protesters who stormed the buildings, setting fire to parts of the Parliament Buildings among other destruction.

Speaking on Saturday at a protester’s burial in Bungoma, Barasa described how he barely avoided dying.

“When the protesters arrived, I ran like Omanyala for my safety. Were it not for my speed, today we would be burying Willy and you would have come to bury me as well,” he said.

Barasa was speaking at the burial of Willy Sitati, a 22-year-old student from a college in Kibera, Nairobi, who was killed during the anti-government protests in Nairobi.

Barasa described how, after the group raided Parliament, he saw a group of youths pointing at him, indicating that he was their target.

“I saw them arriving in Parliament and they pointed at me, saying, ‘There’s the MP with the cap.’ I was behind, but I ran so fast that I was the first to reach Bunge Towers,” he said.

“I saw death pass by in the mirror. They circled around looking for me,” he added.
