Driver of trailer that killed over 50 people in Londiani arraigned, faces 90 charges

The truck driver who caused the July 1 disaster in Londiani Junction, which resulted in the immediate death of 52 people, was charged on Wednesday at Molo Law Courts.

Gilbert Mutuye Mungu, 52, was brought before the court to answer to 90 accusations, including unsafe driving that resulted in fatalities and damages to 10 vehicles.

Ellena Nderitu, the chief magistrate in Molo, announced that she will decide on bail on Thursday.

The driver, a Rwandeese national, said that he was not aware the vehicle was faulty when he was driving it as the prosecution team had claimed.

The Magistrate ordered that he be held up at the Londiani Police Station in Kericho County for the night until she makes a decision on whether or not to grant him bail.

Around 6.30 p.m. on the first day of July, an out-of-control truck hurtling down the Nakuru-Kisumu highway crashed at the busy Londiani junction market, killing 52 people and injuring scores of others.

Thirty-one men, 18 women and two children perished.
